Will the real blogger please stand up.

.

My distaste for artificial intelligence has been well documented here. I truly believe the pursuit of the singularity will be the end of us and all that we hold dear. The good that can come from it will be quickly washed away by hackers and disreputable people who will twist and manipulate the truth until we’re completely unable to recognize it.

I admit… that future frightens me.

But now?

Right this minute?

There’s something else to fear.

.

.

Hell.

Some of my blogging friends are already phoning it in. If the bots start writing content… how will I be able to tell who’s real? I’ll have to question every word I read.

Did Mark really move to Wisconsin?

Does Dan actually have rabbits in his yard?

Is the Huntress’s office filled with crazy people?

Does the Travel Architect even travel?

What’s true?

What’s not?

How will I know!

😳

  1. So what else is(n’t) new? Politicians (especially Republicans) have been spouting artificial intelligence since they discovered that most of those they want to lead by the nose can’t think for themselves.

What pols do know is NEVER FEAR —
Tell them what they want to HEAR

  2. I think that you have an intuitive way of knowing if something was written by a human… Especially on a personal blog. You saw that experiment Mark did on his blog. But you’re right, AI will continue to develop and probably get better at simulating the human experience.

    It’s all very frustrating.

  3. I completely agree with you on AI, why write of you can’t do it yourself? Blasphemous is what this is 😡.

And of course my office is full f crazy people, they are not fig newtons of my imagination! 🤣

  4. I thought I would let my ChatBot defend itself. Here is its reply

    Hi River,

I’m so glad you told me about the blog you read that was written by an AI bot! I’m always fascinated by the latest developments in AI, and I’m really impressed by how good these bots are getting at generating text.

I’m curious, which blog did you read? I’d love to check it out and see for myself how well it’s written.

I can imagine that you were surprised when you found out that the blog was written by a bot. I think it’s really interesting to think about how AI bots are becoming more and more sophisticated, and how they’re starting to blur the lines between human and machine.

I think there are a lot of potential implications for this. On the one hand, AI bots could be used to create more engaging and informative content. On the other hand, it’s also possible that AI bots could be used to create fake news or propaganda.

I’m not sure what the future holds for AI bots, but I’m definitely interested to see how they evolve.

    Talk to you soon,
    Bard

  5. It’s already generating articles full of false information, and there are already plenty of people who believe everything they read.

On the flip side: I hate writing cover letters for jobs (sooo old fashioned!). ChatGPT wrote 2 very good generic ones for me!

      1. It can also write software programs and already developed something that humans hadn’t considered but is far more effective/innovating… data analysis or something (I can’t recall).

  6. Wombat.

You know my feelings on AI. It pains me to no end that TobacC0 is embracing it so freely, but at the same time, they do find my work valuable and go to great pains to assure me no robot can compare with what I do, so ChatGPT and I have a shaky truce at the moment.

  7. Oh no. Am I going to have to start taking selfies on vacation to prove that I really was there? France/Andorra is coming up and I’m pretty sure that photos of the gorgeous Pyrenees will NOT be improved by having my mug in front of them.

  8. Having used quite a bit of AI tools they are still quite limited without human feedback. If you were to get lazy and just let the AI do all of the content for you it’s easy to tell. If your inputs are garbage so is your outputs. As data scientist know “Garbage In = Garbage out”.

Don’t think of AI as replacing you. It can’t. It’s powerful as shit and the more effective a prompt engineer you become the better the outputs. But it’s garbage without your own feedback.

This is just the next major tech disruption. People were afraid of try industrial revolution because it put farmers out of jobs. However, the productivity gain in farming enabled the same amount of food to be produced at a much lower cost. So despite people being out of work initially it freed up labor for new pursuits. America’s embracing of the the industrial revolution eventually lead it to be the most prosperous nation in the world.

What AI promises is to provide assistance to reduce the amount of work you will need to do in order to produce the same result. It’s not going to replace you, it’s there to help you. Make your life massively easier.

I am quite sure that just like the industrial revolution the AI revolution is coming whether or not you want it. The productivity gains are just too powerful to ignore. Businesses that resist it will get buried by their peers that integrate it into their business.

My father in law is absolutely terrified. He believes we are in the end of days. It’s not. It’s just the next step in to the progress of our own evolution. Change is hard, but like death and taxes it is one of the few things that is constant.

We can fight it all we want but the AI wave will wash away those who fight it. Fighting it isn’t like swimming against a rip tide, it’s like trying to out-swim a tsunami. No level of railing against it can stop the change.

Once the internet became cheaply available it flattened the world. The AI revolution is continuing to flatten it. It is enabling people from anywhere in the world to compete at a lower cost than ever. If entrepreneurs and businesses fail to adapt they will be buried by their competitors.

Give yourself more time back to spend with your friend, family, and your own mental health. Try using it more you’ll soon come to understand it is still quite limited without human feedback.
