.
After our walk on the beach, G.’s pants were wet so she changed into shorts. This left us trying to dry her clothing in the sun on the roof of the golf cart while we had lunch…. and that required a readying hand.
.

.
The only lunch available this time of year was at the Inn.
.

.
It’s a grand old building…
.

.
That seems to have new management every time we visit.
.

.
We were the only people in the dining room which didn’t bode well.
.

.
Kelp burger?
Hmm… no.
.

.
Tiny flavorless rubber mussels, brightly colored but mediocre cocktails and disappointing sandwiches left us unsatisfied …
.

.
But the view was nice.
.

.
Another shoreline walk on Hamilton Beach…
.

.

.
And then we drove by my old home.
.

.
Old is the proper adjective because the original section of house on the right was built in 1842.
.

.
And while the old girl still has good bones, I admit to being disappointed by the crumbling stone wall…
.

.
The untrimmed shrubbery, overgrown lawn…
And general feeling of lackadaisical upkeep.
.

.
When we lived here everything was neat as a pin and my father had glorious rows of red roses on the inside of the front wall. I lived here from age 14 to 20 and the place is full of memories, not to mention ghosts of those I’ve loved and lost.
They say you can’t go home again.
I guess they’re right.
😰
.
I’m so fascinated with your photos of your old home and the island. You had a beautiful home.

Thank you. If only you could have seen it in its glory days…

Oh, friend, that’s such a beautiful house. It’s hard to see a home you cherished not being cared for the way it once was.

Beautiful!
The meal reminded me of dining in Encinitas… we got in a fight with our server after he insisted that the closed cooked clams, which were ½ the dish, were fine to eat.

Should have made him eat them then…

It was a surprising answer from the waiter, considering it was a very popular and upscale restaurant. I think we ended up refusing to pay for the dish.

Your old house is not just beautiful but majestic as well. It might not look like when you lived there but, it’s just wonderful. Too bad lunch sucked monkey balls though, you’d think being so close to fresh sea food the cook would learn how to prepare it.

They always bring chefs in from other places. Big mistake, when you go to an Island in Maine you need a Maine cook!

Gorgeous house, even if it isn’t neat as a pin.

Thanks. Lots of memories behind those walls…

That menu did leave a lot to be desired. Your old house looks lie a mansion compared to the house that I grew up in. At the time my father built it, it was a high tech, Frank Lloyd Wright style house but it built on a cheap piece of land in a neighborhood that was going downhill at the time. Since then, it’s only gotten worse. Sad to see.

It is sad. In my mind it’s still beautiful…

How long has it been since you’ve seen your old home? It’s MASSIVE, by the way.

We were there about 7 years ago….
And yes, it’s roomy. 6 bedrooms, 4 1/2 baths, two kitchens and an apartment over the garage. That was mine.

Visiting childhood homes is always bittersweet. Yours is still beautiful, if a bit worn and tired now. The best “pictures” of it will always reside in your memory.

I’m an adventurous eater, but even I draw the line at kelp burgers.
I agree that, while it may not live up to its heyday, your childhood home is still pretty nice.

I guess I always expect to find it as it used to be….

I got to visit my childhood home when it was up for sale years after I left. It was weird and really different, inside.

You mean I’m the only one who’s been craving a Kale Sammy? 🤣
Sorry about your childhood home; I’m sure it was a lovely place—I can see what it was with your description. Does it look like someone is living there? Or they’re just lazy about the upkeep?

Yes, there are new owners… again. It’s switched hands multiple times since we sold it in the late 90’s. At one point it was a lovely bed and breakfast…
