No matter how low key your celebrations, I know they’re more festive than ours at Casa River this year. Catching Covid and having to cancel our trip derailed our holiday plans and left us too sick to care. No tree, no gifts… though I am feeling better and will cook us a nice turkey dinner with all the trimmings today.
No biggie. I’m at the age where all our grand Christmas celebrations are in the past… and that’s fine.
I did see something that made my heart swell with spirit the other day though…

Now that’s my kind of tree topper!

Merry Christmas dear blog friends.
Here’s hoping your home is filled with food, family, fun and if you’re really lucky…. an owl.

Great story, she says, as she looks at the tree empty of a topper this morning. So glad you are feeling better, River. Merry Christmas to you and your honey.

For those who believe in such things, the owl is my spirit animal/guide. That’s a great bit and I can’t wait to show the lovely Catherine. Thank you.
We went to the Biltmore House yesterday. The crowds were very small and the weather was absolutely spectacular. I took a bunch of pictures and I’ll post them up tonight or tomorrow. It was a lovely time but, as always, it could stand with a little improvement. This day’s corrective action took the form of helping out six couples and families who were having trouble taking a good picture. One group was a man, his wife and five kids. Now that’s a selfie. After a long morning of smiling faces and good wishes, I felt so good I could hardly stand it.
Today will be much more subdued. I’m making Brioche French toast for breakfast and Cathy’s trying her hand at matzo ball soup for dinner. I know it sounds a bit…austere but we’ve been eating like a couple of four year olds and that big mug of soup is sounding pretty good.
I like preparing big meals like you do. If you’re getting up to do a full on turkey dinner after your ordeal, that’s dedication.
Merry Christmas, Riv, to you and yours. If you count your friends in that number, then right back at me. Don’t wear yourself out.

Please post those Biltmore photos! It’s been a good 25 years since I’ve been and I know it’s changed a lot.
Nothing wrong with a big pot of soup. It’s comfort food with a capital C.
All the best my friend.
Here’s to another year of wonderful blog friendships.

Merry Christmas, Rivergirl! I’m glad you’re feeling better. Enjoy the day! Here’s at my mom’s there’s only a gas fireplace, so the chance of an owl is low, but there are lots of wild turkeys and deer out back. Maybe one of them will wander in and give us a Christmas to remember.

A deer nibbling the Christmas tree would be just as sweet…

My mom, who is not an animal lover, would be worried about deer poop on her floor, but I say that’s a small price to pay for such an experience. 🦌 🌲

Merry Christmas to you and hubs. I glad you’re feeling well enough to prepare a meal. I hope your husband catches up. I am sorry about your travel plans having to be cancelled.
No owl here, but the resident Coopers Hawk has been feasting from our yard. He’s not welcome by most of the critters we feed.

I don’t imagine he is, but they’re beautiful creatures who need Christmas dinner as well.

It’s low key here as well, but I don’t mind, it’s kind of nice. I wish you happy festive eating and imbibing and may you both feel better soon!
Did you end up getting snow? I saw on the weather map our storm moved east (we have a white Christmas), so I wonder if you got your share.
Merry Christmas!

We got four inches yesterday just in time for Christmas. It was perfect timing!

Merry Christmas River and to the hubs and His Lordship. What you have planned sounds just heavenly. I’m so glad you are feeling better and I hope the hubs is too. I’m planning on brisket, three racks of ribs, homemade Mac n’ cheese, coleslaw and pea can pie for dessert. Three racks of ribs and a brisket you say? Why yes, I have three grown sons and two of them now have fiancées! Have a spectacular day River 🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄

Merry Christmas! I love the owl tree topper. Our Christmas plans went haywire, too. We have a bad air alert and our son and daughter-in-law booked plane tickets yesterday to go back home. My son was having asthma attacks and couldn’t breathe. His doctor advised to leave or check into the ER. We never have bad air! But this Christmas it happened.

Oh, that’s awful. Sorry it ruined his trip…

I was pretty upset that they left, but we do want him to breathe!

Yes. Not breathing is a sure fire way to ruin Christmas dinner.

We have the same feeling. Our grand celebrations are behind us. The kids/grandkids/great grandkids are all 1000 miles away, we are not in any position to travel that many miles, and they are busy with their own lives. All this means is we have quiet holidays. We go out for Thanksgiving, and we are going out for dinner today. We are okay with this. Technology has bridged the distance gap, so proximity is just a zoom away.

I used to adore the big celebrations, but the older I get? The less I care…

Haha… I win…not even having a holiday dinner. But I had no plans from the start.
I hope you enjoy being together and whatever you’re well enough to prepare. Merry Christmas!

The good news: The snow didn’t melt.
