Let’s play.

Because it’s time to reflect.

Kale.

After the window installations disaster, roof leaks, the loss of a toenail, my husband’s eye surgery debacle, numerous home remodeling nightmares, the erection of view busting greenhouses across the street, crazy property tax increases, catching Covid, a cancelled holiday trip, a non existent Christmas and a dead water heater? I cry uncle!

Kale.

My 2024 was wall to wall 🥬 .

Now you. What food represents your year?

  1. Cilantro. 2025 started off green (somewhat) and grew into the devils herb! Like you I had home improvement issues. A roof repair, window replacements, a traffic accident (not my fault) that left me without a car for almost a month because of these degen NM drivers, COVID during the Summer, the mother of all bad presidential elections and last month my water heater started to croak. So it’s definitely CILANTRO because 2024 has left a bad taste in my mouth.

      1. Liver and onions was Cathy’s response as well. I always hated it because it was liked being mugged.

I walk in the door and it smells great. I head for the kitchen and there’s my Mom, lovingly stirring a big iron skillet full of meat and beautiful, glorious gravy. One step closer and I can see my Mom’s wry little Mona Lisa “I’m up to something” smile and the “Meat”, lying in the gravy like slabs of clay. The vision I had built in my mind melted away, just as if someone left a cake out in the rain. Fortunately, I don’t live with, or near, my mother anymore. She still has the recipe.

  2. Lasagna. Our many yard projects were multi-layered and built upon the preceding ones. Wasn’t much to look at in the beginning, but by the time we finished, it was a beautiful and tasty masterpiece.

  3. That’s a tough question. It has to be bitter and sweet. I had good moments and devastating ones. Bitter would be kale or grapefruit. Sweet would be my favorite razor clams or chowder that are sweetly delicious and hold comforting memories for me.

  4. I hope this doesn’t change our relationship, but I actually love kale and we eat it (roasted) about twice a week, maybe more lately since it was on sale recently.

I’m not gonna complain about my 2024, surely there was a lot of shit in there, but it could have been worse.

Wishing you and yours a much improved 2025! ❤️
