If you’re not sure what to cook tonight.

Tired of making the same old things?

Need something new in your recipe files?

River’s got your back…

Rodent.

It’s what’s for dinner.

I make gumbo now and then, but never with nutria.

And here I thought everything tasted like chicken.

Nutria bacon rolls.

Can green iguana quesadillas be far behind?

  1. My mother once tried to con me into eating rabbit by saying it was chicken. Trust instantly broken, I never ate het chicken again. I don’t need a Nutria reminder!!

Given the economy, people may turn to this soon! Just yesterday, I was thinking that the younger gen has probably never heard of pensioners eating cat food to survive. So… which sounds worse? I hope I don’t find out!!

    1. Why do people say everything horrible tastes like chicken?
If it tastes like chicken, I’ll just eat chicken.
That being said, food is cultural. I’m fairly certain if I was starving in Cameroon, I’d eat bat…. and hope it tastes like chicken.

      1. LOL!!!
But I still won’t eat seafood!!

Have you ever had squab? I tried it, of my own volition, and said, “This is exactly what I imagine a rat would taste like!”

  2. I watched a show once that had New Orleans police sharpshooters rode in the backs of pickup trucks, shooting nutria along the banks of canals. I wouldn’t eat one on a bet but I would certainly be glad to donate my kill to a local eatery in order to support local business. Feral hog? I’ll pick that piggie, you bet.

  3. When I lived in South Korea for several years, I tried many different types of food and often wondered about some of the dishes. The food was delicious! When I left, the Korean gave me a kimchi pot and taught me how to make it have that certain strong taste by burying it in a strong container in the ground. I kept the beautiful container but I usually buy my kimchi nearby!

      1. Well, I believe back in those days they were hoping I would stick around and make a life in Korea but that was not my path. I was waiting for Mike to enter or rather I had yet to cross paths with him.

  4. “And here I thought everything tasted like chicken.” Since they say rabbit taste like chicken and nutria tastes like rabbit, then nutria tastes like chicken via the transitive property or six degrees of (Kevin) Bacon.

I ate iguana in Nicaragua but passed on cuy (guinea pig) in Colombia because I was a vegetarian then.

  5. The over-abundance of nutria got a lot of play a few weeks ago. I remember a time when nutria fur was popular for coats etc. A quick Google and it seems it is a poor man’s beaver – fashion-wise.

  6. I did a permaculture course and everyone was very practical about protein. Raising your own protein is preferred. Apparently raising guinea pigs and cooking them on a sandwich press is a real thing. I also raise some of my own protein – beans!
