.
There have always been hummingbirds at Casa River.
.

.
I put a sugar water feeder out (no artificial dye) as soon as we spot the first one appear in May and enjoy watching the brilliant little jewels drop by for a drink now and then.
We rarely see more than two at a time.
But this year we have three, and four…
.

.
And five.
.

.
And then?
Holy hummers Batman!
We’ve been bombarded by hungry avians.
.
.
I had to put out a second feeder and I’m refilling them every single day.
It’s been crazy…
But absolutely marvelous!
💕
I love it! I gave up on our hummingbird feeder because a Gila Woodpecker would attach himself to it and suck it all down without moving!

I had a pecker on the larger feeder for a while, but it was too much work and he gave up…

The Gila hangs upside down and drains it. So frustrating.

Guess the Woodpecker is hungry too.

Or a glutton! He has bird seed but he prefers sugar water.

Wow!!! Awesome!! Someone obviously spread the word that the nectar at River’s house is the best around!

We’ve had so many hot days I started changing the water daily, I think that’s made a huge difference.

My Aunt fed them all the time and it was nothing to see at least 30 around her feeder. It was actually scary to sit too close to it. lol

So what are you adding to the sugar water to attract so many? Cocaine? 😉 Maybe just a touch of maple syrup?

Nothing exotic. But I am changing it much more often and I think that makes a big difference.

That’s amazing!! I didn’t know they came herds. 😄
I saw my first one close up near my Weigela bush. Except, the hummingbird was confused because I have a small Swiss flag just a couple of feet away hanging off something and it flew to that first thinking it’s a flower.

I’ve known other people who have multiple feeders, but this is the most we’ve ever seen.

They come in ‘charms’ or ‘bouquets’ apparently. Can’t argue with that!

Oh, that’s perfect!
Bouquets of hummingbirds. I love that.

Wow! How charming!
A group of hummingbirds is most commonly called a charm, but they can also be known as a bouquet, a glittering, a hover, or a shimmer.

Once they know, they can swarm like mosquitoes. Be careful!

Wow, mine all fight over the orange tree. Like British Spitfires. I’ve never seen so many together and not attacking.

The buzzing and squeaking is crazy.

Wasps have descended upon our hummingbird feeder as of late, scaring the birds away. I am not happy about this.

That can be a problem. Does your feeder have bee guards?

Just an ant moat. I’m surprised the bees and wasps are even able to get any of the sugar water (non-colored, of course) out.

Bring the feeder in for a few days. Sometimes that works…

Lucky you. We have two feeders and one little Napoleon makes sure no other bird comes to HIS feeders.

That’s the way it used to be here. Other than changing the liquid more often, I have no explanation for our big crowds.

Looks lovely! There is truly a sense of unadulterated happiness in seeing nature be a part of your life like that. 😊
