.
We have a herd every night.
.

.
And they’re always a joy to watch.
.

.
The clunk that makes them scatter in this video was a male cardinal slamming into the glass on our kitchen porch.
.
.
Thankfully he was just dazed and flew off shortly after.

.
The harem master.
.

.
Dusted with snow during a storm.
.

.
Sadly the little plum tree we planted two years ago is tasty.
.

.
And loses a lot of lower branches in the winter.

🥴

Nice of them to do some pruning. They are beautiful.
The snow from our driveway is piled high around the Korean Dogwood in our front yard, and the bunny is pruning it.

We’ve been planting a tree in that spot for the past twenty years. It’s near the bird feeders so it provides shelter and shade, but unfortunately no one leaves it alone long enough for it to thrive and this is the 6th attempt.
Sigh.

Your plum tree is the olive branch for deers in this weather. They get food. You get photos.

We feed them every night.
I’d prefer they leave the olive branch alone.

Last night, well after dark, I was working on my puzzle sitting in front of a window, and a sparrow landed on the screen. Poor thing must have been startled out of his slumber by some predator. It clung for a bit and flew off into the night. I hope it was safe!

A local songwriter worked up a little ditty while driving through the woods at night dodging deer on the back roads. Not his finest work, but the chorus was “Dem deer dey’re here, den dey’re dere, dey’re here, dey’re dere, dey’re everywhere.” It was sung as a round. I hope the written approximation of the accent makes sense if you ain’t from dis neck’a de woods. (Partial translation, “Them deer they’re here, then they’re there…”)

The deers look like they are dancing, almost and well fed. It is so nice they come near your home and you can capture them.

I was reading a blog about a cyclist who toured all over and when she made her way through Maine, she commented on the absolute stillness and compared it to being in some parts of uninhabited Canada. It was an interesting read.

Maybe that’s why I love it. Peace and quiet…

There are years when we’ve had as many as 25. This winter the most has been 11.

Wow, that is amazing. Even years ago, in the Catskills in the middle of nowhere….I remember seeing 3, but back then no cameras. You saw because you were walking through the woods.

If those deer are distracting birds to the point they crash into windows, well, the deer must go.

Our kitchen landing has large glass panels on both sides. Sadly the birds think they can fly through it…

I’m glad your cardinal is okay. I hate it when I hear the clunks of birds slamming into our windows. Once we had a huge Harris’s Hawk carrying a quail fly into a window and break it! The good news was the quail survived and got away. The hawk lived, too. Your deer are so beautiful!
