Let’s play.

.

If you’ve never read a Stephen King book or watched a Stephen king movie?

Never mind.

I’ve never been on a cruise, and have no desire to board a floating Petri dish of noro virus contagion… but if forced?

I’d bring John Coffey from The Green Mile, the only Stephen King book that literally made me weep. If you don’t think the master of horror and weirdness can pen a heartfelt and beautiful story? You need to read The Green Mile. I dare you not to choke up when John cures the warden’s wife.

That poor man is in dire need of a vacation.

And if John can’t come, because.. you know, he’s dead?

I’d pick Andy Dufresne and Red, from The Shawshank Redemption. The other King masterpiece that proves he can really write if he wants to.

Andy, Red and me at the bar…. raising a glass to Rita Hayworth, second chances and friendship.

Yeah, I can see that.

How about you…

What Stephen King character are you taking on a cruise?

  1. If you would have asked me this before I read your post, I would have said no way. But I had forgotten about The Green Mile. It’s been a long time, but I have seen the film. I mist revisit that film.

  2. A cruise huh? I’d take the big green faced goblin 18-wheeler from Maximum Overdrive. I’d take it back down to where I use to work and wait for a couple of people in the parking lot. Not exactly covert, but who is going to mess with that thing? Not the kind of cruise you were thinking about, but a cruise non the less……😆

  3. I’m taking Stephen King on a technicality; he wrote about himself in On Writing, so I’m thinking that counts. I would spend the whole cruise picking his brain and chatting about the evil MAGA movement. With a little luck, we’d bond so much, we’d end up doing the Limbo together!

  4. He writes some of the scariest characters. I remember the movie where the writer is kidnapped and held hostage. Misery. Great plot but the role played by Kathy Bates as the obsessive fan terrified me. I am not a big fan of King but I do like his notes “On Writing.” As an instructor, I taught English and this story was popular and short to the point for Freshman Comp. However, the students who liked his horror style writing kind of gave me the willies. I would take Kathy Bates on a cruise if I wanted to be left alone to write.
