Day two of wall sconce installation saw our mantle taken over by tools

Multiple trips to the hardware store were needed and my husband’s patience was wearing thin.

I was trying to speed the process along by dropping helpful hints but was promptly told to vacate the work area.

.

The old wiring was troublesome and at one point I told my husband just to mount the lights and not worry about them being functional. To be honest we haven’t turned them on for years.

There’s a reason for this.

The built in bookcases on either side of the fireplace are deep.

Four rows of hardcovers deep, and reaching the light switch?

Way back there …

Means removing a few dozen books every time.

As you can see by the original unpainted paneling, it hasn’t been uncovered for decades.

Stupidest light switch placement… ever.

  1. That’s a beautiful wall and the new sconces are perfect for it, but geesh that light switch!!! Someone must have deliberately wanted to make it hard to find!!

  3. Life is tough for people that use bookcases to hold books. I always laugh at the photos of a bookcase that has a glass apple on a shelf next to a 5×7 photo frame. That’s crazy! Good luck with the lights.

  5. That is the easiest fix but without an electrical skillset it would be daunting. Power off, cut a hole in the wall where you want the switch and fish wires through to new switch. Button it up. You go turn the panel back on and he can see if there is power to your new beautiful lights and if so run up to see and place a cover plate on it. I say call an electrician while you two go out for a drink 🙂 Maybe $300 or less up in the woods of Maine. Functional lights and a fully useable bookcase will be your win for the day. My home is from the 50’s actually an old camp with many things not permissible that we plug away at. When mine says he is all set and I am trying to help I just grab a hotrod and go for a ride. Call the electrician and be done with that bs in the shelf. Enjoy our warmth these next few days get out and go play. There are 2 orchid shows in NH I hope to take in. Bedford and Nashua.

  8. I’m wondering if all retired military husbands are the same. He came home from the hospital better and within the next day time period decided to work on something for the new part of the garden involving steel wiring (?) and then called our handyman about reinstalling to code a light for outside. HIs mind doesn’t stop thinking about how to better place or something. I made the mistake of showing him some chairs (beautiful) for outside porch with pc piping and he said, “These are perfect. Lets get them.” Before I knew it, we were on our way past roads being build, condos being remade, and finally catching up. He has returned. Have a good weekend. Celebrating.
