Don’t forget the filters!

.

It’s going to be hot in Maine today and tomorrow.

.

.

Weirdly out of season hot as you can see when our temps drop back to normal on Thursday. And even though it will only be two days of humid high temps, I talked my husband into installing our window air conditioning units this morning because yours truly has hot flashes… and a hot flashing wife is a cranky wife and a cranky wife doesn’t cook. If my guy wants a hot meal? He needs a cooled spouse.

Anyway, as we struggled to seat them …. I swear they get heavier every year!…. I looked through the grate and realized I hadn’t cleaned the filters.

.

.

Apparently for quite some time.

😳

.

.

Holy Hell!

.

.

The amount of dirt, dust, pollen, fuzz balls, cat hair, spider webs, skin cells, fish scales or whatever else the hell that is… was disgusting.

How the machines managed to work with that amount of clogged air intake last year I don’t know. But they’ll be breathing a sigh of relief this summer.

.

,

So remember …

Clean your filters!

  1. Thanks for the reminder. My unit takes disposable filters. I need to check them. I think they were changed when winter hit though so probably aren’t too bad.

  2. That is seriously dirty. That AC should be happy when it starts up this year and can breathe again. My dehumidifier turns a light on when it wants its filter cleaned. I hope you change your furnace filter more often than you clean the AC filter.

  3. Okay remind me again why you all don’t have central AC? Last summer I had my maintenance guy install a mini-split in the den, where I spend most of my time. Low and behold it actually cools down or heats up the entire house. He did turn on my AC unit on the roof though, because although I don’t have hot flashes it gets unbearably hot in the summer months.

    1. Very few houses in Maine have central air, though believe me I’ve been sputtering about it.
When we had the heat pump unit put in the barn we had the guy assess our house but it’s just not laid out properly for mini splits. Too many hallways and separate rooms. He said we’d need 6 units to cool properly and if I’m going to do that, I’ll just do central.

      1. 🤔 That doesn’t sound right. I think three mini splits would do the job as long as you had one in your bedroom for comfort. My mini split cools down almost all of my house (1683ft) except for my bedroom because it’s the farthest from the den. I’m planning on having him install one in the living room as well.

      2. We have 90 degree turns and he said there was no air flow in the back of the house. It would be too expensive for the three months we use air and honestly they’re not that great for heat with the extreme cold we get in the winter. Our barn unit freezes up and stops working when it drops below zero.

  4. You have Window Shakers? That’s what we call them down here. I can’t imagine not having central air, but I do envy you for not needing it all year round. 🤣

Growing up, our house had two window units: one in my mom’s room and one in our living area. How we lived like that in South Florida is beyond me!
