There was a lot of buzz about Widow’s Bay though I admit I didn’t jump right in. But liking Matthew Rhye, I eventually decided to give this a whirl. While I’m not sure if I should categorize it as a comedy or a thriller … it’s definitely both, with a cast of quirky characters that grow on you. Slow at the start, it took a few episodes for me to engage, but once I did I was all in. Maybe living on an island helped, idk.

I was an avid Game of Thrones watcher so when this new series started a few years ago I was there for it. Honestly, seasons one and two left a lot to be desired but I think they’ve finally found their way this time around and season three is filled with intrigue, betrayal and yes… dragons.

I had high hopes for this political drama but found it a bit disjointed and preachy. DeNiro’s character was wooden, unlovable and a bit of an ass.

Damon and Affleck are usually a good romp, and if you can get past the gratuitous and unnecessary over use of the word f*ck in the first 20 minutes ( geesh, I’m not a prude but there are other adjectives ) it’s a decent enough movie about crooked cops.

If you’re not a history buff like me, the battle sequences and strategies might be a little dry. But this 20 part series is as comprehensive a documentary of the war as you’re ever apt to find. Narrated by Hanks, it’s a carefully researched program that brings the true horrors of human conflict to light.

I loved Yellowstone and was anxiously awaiting the return of Rip and Beth. They didn’t disappoint and the addition of veteran actors Ed Harris and Annette Benning make this new rootin’ tootin’ cowboy show worth watching.

Bad is good and good is bad in this riveting 4 part limited series. Tucci is quietly amazing as the stone cold, conniving puppet master while Tennant answers the age old question how far would you go for a loved one with heart wrenching angst.

Makes me wish there was a season two.

  2. I’m not sure I fully understand the hype around Widow’s Bay, but we did enjoy it. I think having been to Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard and Block Island many times (in summer) helped—I always think what would it be like to live on one of these islands YEAR ROUND.

    1. Living on an island is challenging in many ways. The ferry schedule determines all, everyone knows your business and hauling your groceries up and down wharf ramps gets old quickly. Especially in Maine winter.

I recently got rid of almost all my streaming services – what’s left is Acorn, Brit Box, PBS – which are all annual subscriptions and of course Prime video because it’s part of my Amazon membership – not something intentional. Basically I watch nothing at all – I go days without turning the tv on (and I just bought a new one – seems after 15 years tvs can start to fail). I had Apple TV for free and saw a few episodes of ‘Widows Bay’ – I wasn’t impressed. Is the Dutton thing part of that whole Yellowstone thing? We started to watch it way back when – and we just couldn’t get interested in the first iteration.

    At my age having an annual subscription seems optimistic and I like the idea of picking up and dropping services as shows come and go – I’ll pick up Netflix in the fall after all the episodes of 2 particular shows have dropped and then cancel – same for HBO Max and ‘The Pitt’ next year – tho I wasn’t all that impressed with season 2 of The Pitt –

    1. Yes, Dutton Ranch is part of the Yellowstone universe. If you didn’t like the original you won’t like this one. I have free Amazon Prime as well but rarely find anything interesting now that the Marvelous Mrs Maisel is over. Widows Bay didn’t live up to the hype, but nothing ever really does.

    1. I love a good mystery/drama/thriller. The more surprises the better. I just couldn’t get a handle on Widows at the beginning. Was I supposed to laugh? Do I take the violence seriously? Pick a lane already.

  5. It took me a while to get into Widow’s Bay because of the extreme quirkiness of the characters. (I am all for quirky characters, but there is a limit.) But then something clicked and I was hooked. I completely agree with you about House of the Dragons. The first season was excruciating, but because there are so few fantasies on TV, I soldiered on, and I was rewarded. The second season was significantly better and the third season is cooking. Will be checking out Inside Man.

    1. Widows was an odd one. But once I settled in and saw things were going to get weird? I was fine.
      As for Dragons, they’re never to top GOT… those characters were iconic, but season one threw so many people at us with very little time for development, not to mention they were all blonde with maddeningly similar names, it was hard to keep up. If I hadn’t loved GOT so much I probably would have dropped it, but now I’m committed. Though I still don’t have a favorite character yet. Tyrion is hard to beat. He drank and he knew things. 🤣

  7. I am watching Harlan Coben “I will find you”. Enjoyable and mostly light entertainment. Worst Neighbors was definitely a little too scary for me and made me appreciate the great neighbors surrounding us!

  9. I was a Dr. Who fan before I became a GoT fan, so seeing Matt Smith as a Targaryen has really tickled my fancy. There were a couple of scenes in the last season where I had to slam my laptop shut and take a break from the show (no spoilers, but I don’t like seeing children hurt in any show or movie). But watching the show go full on dragon has been a delight.

  11. I avoid anything scary, but the Husband is obsessed with Widows Bay. Tells everyone he sees about it.
    I find the overuse of swearing to be tedious as well, but I’m willing to give a Damon (hubba) and Affleck (hubba) flick a go!

  12. Yay for Widow’s Bay. I was pulled in from the start, thought it got a little too slow in the middle, and then crushed it at the end. Looking forward to Season 2. I agree The Rip was pretty good and worth a view. I watched Season 1 of House of the Dragon but just couldn’t get into it. I put a high bar up for it after Game of Thrones and these characters did not resonate with me. Yet, I have heard folks are enjoying it more as it goes along, so perhaps I will circle back and watch some more eps.

    So, what you’re saying is that De Niro’s character in the show is much like him in real life? 🤣
