I had a creepy crawly issue with my old hummingbird feeders this summer . Ants discovered both of them and every time I checked? There were dead insects floating in the liquid.
When ants die, they release a chemical that disgusts the hummingbirds so after trying all the home remedies…. Vaseline on the hanging pole, vinegar to disrupt their scent trail etc… I sucked it up and bought new feeders with ant moats on top.

WOW!!!! I’m insanely envious!! I had to remove feeders (so hummingbirds stopped being cat food) but still get 1 or 2 visiting the false honeysuckle outside my bedroom window.
I gave a beautiful set of feeders to the travel neighbors but I suspect they’ll be too difficult to wash/fill.

When I had the ant problem I was emptying and filling the feeders every day. The presence of fresh liquid really made a difference in the number of visitors. Now I refill them everyday because they’re empty.

Multiple birds on one feeder! that is quite an accomplishment! We have one little Napoleon who won’t let any other bird near his feeder.

Ours used to be that way, but when I had to empty and refill the feeders every day because of the ants? The fresh liquid attracted more birds. They still fight, but there are too many of them to chase off at once.

We have hummingbirds in our neighborhood. But they’re too small and keep too far away for me to get decent pictures.
Maybe I need a feeder in the backyard…

That is fabulous. I gave up on hummingbird feeders because Gila Woodpeckers sucked them dry in a single sitting.

They sell the ant moats separately. We bought a couple last year, hooked them up between the feeders and the pole, and voila! Problem solved.
Just gotta remember to top them off every couple of days.
