Let’s play.

.

You know the drill.

.

.

I’m going with 4 and 6.

4. When we visited France… me with very rudimentary French language skills and my husband with a non existent grasp… we felt like fish out of water, which resulted in many strange hand signals that probably insulted the natives. (It was pre cell phone days, no on demand translator for us) So yes, being able to converse without looking like brain dead baboons would be helpful.

6. First class is ridiculously more expensive than business so I rarely if ever book it. But it would be nice to have a little more elbow room and a full can of Coke.

As for the rest, we’re retired and don’t need vacation days.

Perfect weather is nice, but it’s on those gloomy rainy days that we discover the great museums and art galleries.

I’m a type A researcher. If there’s a secret spot? I’ll find it.

Make lifelong friends? My husband will talk to a rock. We never meet strangers.

Now you.

Pick two!

  1. I agree, 4 and 6. You learn a lot about a place when you can talk to the locals. I don’t speak any language fluently but I can muddle through a brief conversation about food in Spanish, Japanese, and Mandarin. I’ve found the best restaurants that way!

I was upgraded once to first class (Air Canada, after my flight was cancelled twice due to a freak blizzard in British Columbia). It was WONDERFUL! For the first time in ages I got a pretty decent hot meal and complimentary wine. The space in my seat made me feel like I was a rockstar. If only I could afford to fly like that every time I take a flight.

    1. I wish we could as well.
I wouldn’t mind paying a couple of extra hundred but the last time I checked on a flight it would have been over $1,600 more for two. And I just can’t rationalize that.

  2. 1 & 2 believe you me my shit job went from 4 to 5 hrs pto every two weeks or 120 hrs…woo hoo. But not for everyone. No personal days no sick time with ok pay, the previous company i worked for before being bought out gave 4 personal days, 999 hrs sicks and 4 weeks vacation, but the pay sucked. Sorry for the rant.

  3. I’m with you – 4 and 6. For pretty much the same reasons. Sometimes the locals have a favorite food that is beyond my comfort level and people are on their best behavior on vacations or if you’re giving them money! Good weather generally means more crowds. One item left off the list that is Number 1 for me – good health and lots of energy on a trip! A vacation with a tummy ache is no vacation! No matter if everything else is perfect!

  4. The image of resorting to wild hand gestures in pre-smartphone France is so relatable! Gesture-charades in a foreign country is practically a rite of passage. I’m definitely going with #4 and #6 too—a full can of Coke and legroom in first class sounds unbeatable!

      1. Well, I am sure some of us are talking about them. Two faced, hmm. Oh, well. Enjoy your weekend and read some good novels and donate to some good causes, beside your knee. Hope it moves forward!

  5. 4 and 6 – Most definitely. I understand far more than I speak in several languages – one of the ‘perks’ of living in NYC. I always learn the basic courtesy phrases but my French pronunciation is merde. I’ve been upgraded to first class on numerous occasions and it’s just lovely, isn’t it.

  6. 1. Every week is a vacation for me.
    2. We need bad weather once in a while to make us appreciate the good weather.
    3. Haven’t vacationed in years so no need for new spots.
    4. See number 3.
    5. This one I LIKE!! I’ll take new friends any time.
    6. Never flown and never will.
