.
A friend of mine took this picture at Old Orchard Beach last week after a bizarre mass wash up of clams.

.
Was it the storm?
The earthquake?
The (then future) eclipse?
.

.
I don’t know.

.
But they were all still alive and I’m guessing lots of local residents had chowder that night.

How odd. You’d think if it were caused by a storm, it would happen more often. They say animals do weird things during eclipses, but an earthquake seems as likely a cause (to my unscientific mind) as any. Either way, I think it qualifies as a new meaning for the term “clam up.”

To my knowledge it’s never happened there before so it does makes me wonder…

I’m thinking by now the smell must be something really special. Now, all the chowder with none of the digging? If I was in a position to capitalize on this bounty, whoever’s cooking could just hand me a bucket and tell me when to stop.

Clams are expensive, I doubt they lasted long.

Odd. They’re open, so easy prey. But I wouldn’t eat them.

Don’t you mean….Clampocalyps?
That is very strange and that they were still alive is even stranger. I suspect a lot of them didn’t go to waste, at least I hope not. That would have been a shame, think of all the chowder, fried clams and even linguini with clam sauce.

They weren’t all alive, but enough were that people were harvesting.

I don’t think I’d eat these guys – although I love clam chowder. They could have some strange clam virus.

Maybe they just wanted a better view of the eclipse…I don’t think the earthquake would send them ashore. Odd indeed.

They’re larger than the usual little necks we dig around here, so that’s odd as well.

Oxygen thing maybe.. similar to mass fish die off?

I love steamed clams but haven’t made them in years. This might have something to do with the fact that I now live nowhere near an ocean.

Inland clams should always be avoided.
