It isn’t often we see a Pileated woodpecker at Casa River…
.

.
But this big guy flew in the other day and had a nosh on the suet nugget cage.

.
Pileateds usually stay in the woods and rarely venture into our wide open back yard.

Good thing I had my phone camera handy.

Wow! Great pics. 😀

Nice pics. I got a couple pics of one outside my kitchen window. I’ll dig them up and post them.

We rarely see them here so it was a treat.

Same here. I got so jazzed up I had to call Cathy at work.

We can’t put out suet because of the starlings. We will set out some corn for the crows. Cathy likes them and they seem to like her too. I can sit on the porch for a long time and not see one within twenty feet. Cathy comes out and there will be one or two sitting on the rail within a couple minutes, squawking conversationally. She’s working on developing a trade relationship with them, which could be interesting.

Ugh. The starlings…. they come in droves during the spring. Eat everything in a few hours. A suet a day. More if I’d let them.

I am sure that woodpecker read some rave reviews about the hospitality there.

I wouldn’t doubt it. We do put out a nice spread…

You’re lucky – we have woodpeckers all the time and they can be a nuisance.

We have downy and hairy, as well as sapsuckers … but not too many pileateds.

I like your suet nugget cage. We just have an open feeder for ours, which of course the squirrels can navigate like nobody’s business.

The nuggets are great. No slime…

I’m lucky to see them weekly, but still, they always make me smile. They are SO darn big and special.

They’re really too big for the suet feeders so it’s comical to watch them.
