.
We had a new guest at Casa River yesterday.
.

.
Running up and down the driveway at lightning speed.
.

.
They’re cute little fellows we rarely see on our property.
.

.
A shorebird who often nests alongside fields..
.

.
The killdeer emits a shrill shriek of a call and is famous for pretending to have a broken wing and luring predators away from its nest with its supposed injury.
.

.
Cute.
And smart.
Not to mention fast.
❤️
.
A very interesting bird.

Their relative is the plover, maybe you have them…?

Yes, I have heard of plovers, but I don’t think they’re around here.

How lovely. We get ringed plover in the UK (very similar but with a single neck collar) but the name “killdeer” is so romantic

I wonder where the name came from. They’re way too small to hurt deer.

Now, that is something I would like to see. I wonder if it’s on YouTube.

They are so cute; love their little stripped necks.
I’d not seen one in person until this past year. When our pond was being filled, a few of them showed up in the GA mountains. Maybe the southern ones aren’t so much shore birds as they are water birds?

They like large fields as well. Which is why we have this one….

At least it’s not a grey catbird.
