.
Woodpeckers that is.
.

.
There was a nice pileated at our suet nugget feeder out back …
.

.
And another on our choke cherry tree out front at the same time.
.

.
It’s rare enough to see one of these large beauties on the property… no less two.
.

.
Like I say..
.

.
It was a banner day for peckers.
😉
.
You know who else has been a (much less impressive) pecker lately? Mother Nature. She knocked out our power for two days. That’s not often the excuse for my blog absence, but this time it is.

Ouch.
I prefer our peckers, they’re less disruptive.

Yet another storm came through yesterday late afternoon. I was running around plugging in all the things that need charging. Fortunately, the lights stayed on.

I held a woodpecker in my hands, once. It had knocked itself unconscious on a neighbor’s door and he brought it to me. I had a reputation for helping birds, I guess.
Also, I’ve held a hummingbird.

Actually, I though his neck was broken. So, I put him in a shoebox with some foliage and just set it where I could see it. Startled the daylights out of me when he came to…

Seems like pileateds often do stuff in pairs, right? I love to hear their calls. Once I swear a pair was laughing at me while I was trying to start the lawnmower. Yours are gorgeous!

To be honest this is the first pair we’ve ever spotted. We hear them, but never see two at once.

How cool! In the South I’ve heard them called Good God birds, since that’s what you say when you see them. I love that.

Was either of them named Woody?

Huntress, have you heard about the new craze: Cow Cuddling? When I saw it on the news I immediately thought of you.

Thank you……I think. What made you think of me, the cow part? 🤣. We do walk cross the street when they bring the calf’s to get their vaccines and pet them. On occasion I even hug one, if they aren’t being stubborn.

I know you love cows. And though I have no idea what you look like, I saw a picture in my mind of you cuddling a cow, like they were showing on the news.

I do love cows, horses, baby sheep and goats. Oddly enough I’ve been exposed to all of these since I began working here. I love it! Oh except when the chickens get loose and are all over the road and the agricultural students are trying to wrangle them back, lol.

That must be quite the comedy. Loving all animals, and by extension all living beings, is good for the spirit. I do hope you are having a good life. It sounds .ike you are.

Is it strange I’m jealous you get to hug cows…?

They are huge! We only have little ones out here.

We have Downy, Hairy and the Pileated. They dwarf the others…

You’re proud of this title, aren’t you? (You should be.)
I was reading up on hawks recently (red tails, though this probably applies to Cooper’s, too), and it said they often go after woodpeckers because their flight patterns are a little more erratic and clumsy than other birds. I’d urge W&W to look over their shoulders constantly!

Actually the Pileated and Coopers Hawk are about the same size, though the Hawk is beefier. Woodpeckers do fly oddly though. They dip and rise, up and down. It’s quite comical to watch.

“Oh, it’s so BIG!” But, seriously, those are large woodpeckers!

It’s almost too big, but don’t tell anyone I said that.

If they can be “almost too large” then they can be “almost too small.” And women try to tell us size doesn’t matter. Another fairy tale.
Nice peckers, River.
