  1. I held a woodpecker in my hands, once. It had knocked itself unconscious on a neighbor’s door and he brought it to me. I had a reputation for helping birds, I guess.

    Also, I’ve held a hummingbird.

      1. Actually, I though his neck was broken. So, I put him in a shoebox with some foliage and just set it where I could see it. Startled the daylights out of me when he came to…

  2. Seems like pileateds often do stuff in pairs, right? I love to hear their calls. Once I swear a pair was laughing at me while I was trying to start the lawnmower. Yours are gorgeous!

      1. Thank you……I think. What made you think of me, the cow part? 🤣. We do walk cross the street when they bring the calf’s to get their vaccines and pet them. On occasion I even hug one, if they aren’t being stubborn.

      2. I do love cows, horses, baby sheep and goats. Oddly enough I’ve been exposed to all of these since I began working here. I love it! Oh except when the chickens get loose and are all over the road and the agricultural students are trying to wrangle them back, lol.

      3. That must be quite the comedy. Loving all animals, and by extension all living beings, is good for the spirit. I do hope you are having a good life. It sounds .ike you are.

  3. You’re proud of this title, aren’t you? (You should be.)

I was reading up on hawks recently (red tails, though this probably applies to Cooper’s, too), and it said they often go after woodpeckers because their flight patterns are a little more erratic and clumsy than other birds. I’d urge W&W to look over their shoulders constantly!

    1. Actually the Pileated and Coopers Hawk are about the same size, though the Hawk is beefier. Woodpeckers do fly oddly though. They dip and rise, up and down. It’s quite comical to watch.
