Day 2… the Maine tourist adventure begins.

.

We had 5 full days with our favorite people and needed to make the most of it. D’s husband T. and daughter G. had never been to Maine before and we wanted to give them the full immersive experience.

First stop?

.

.

L.L. Beans.

.

.

And the required tourist photo in front of the giant boot.

.

.

A giant backpack had been added since my last visit so that had to be tried on for size as well.

.

.

The L. L. Bean perpetual clock.

.

.

If you’ve never been, the flagship stores in Freeport are worth a visit. Just remember to bring your wallet.

.

.

Next stop? The Eastern Promenade in Portland, where you can see luxury yachts….

.

.

And whatever the heck that is.

Speaking of yachts…

.

.

Because everyone needs a spare.

.

.

Damn!

.

.

Moving on to South Portland, we visited Bug Light Park where T. was loving the ocean views.

.

.

Bug Light.

A famous (in these parts) mini lighthouse.

.

.

G. was fascinated with the cruise ships that are now allowed in Portland harbor.

.

.

And took a break from walking on the rocks.

.

.

The beach.

.

.

The light.

Next up was Spring Point lighthouse, which the husband and I had never visited.

.

.

We could see it… but never managed to find it.

.

.

We followed the gps directions to the parking lot and climbed multiple hills but couldn’t find a way down.

.

.

We walked paths that dead ended in the woods… and circled the embankment.

But still couldn’t get there.

.

.

After half an hour of fruitless searching?

We gave up, took a few photos from a distance and moved on.

  1. A great start with a great tour guide! I’ve been to the LLBean store, but I don’t know if I ever got the shot with the boot. Dammit!
I’ve been in that same situation: you can actually SEE where you want to end up, but can’t find a way there. It’s a kind of “lost” that has no proper word for it. Wrote a whole post about it. It’s frustrating. Probably more frustrating than actually being genuinely lost. Still, looks like you had a grand first day out. Here’s to four more!

    1. L.L.Beans has expanded into numerous buildings at the Freeport location. If you haven’t been in the last 5 years… you haven’t been.
The lighthouse was ridiculously frustrating. If I was younger I would have said to hell with it and just skidded down the hill.

  2. I was a tourist @ LL Bean back in the ’70s. Our “guide” took us there at 2-3 AM, saying it was too full of tourists during the day. I’d still have the boots (I mean Maine Hunting Shoes – like the one in your photo, but taller) I bought that day if my son hadn’t “borrowed” them.

My first encounter with megayachts was off the coast of Mexico, when I realized the boat had a helicopter landing pad. Faster way to shore than a dinghy, I guess.

      1. I used to play competitive baseball in both England and Scotland. As much as I try to watch MLB I also enjoy MiLB. (Not seen much this season though I subscribe to have access to ALL MLB and MiLB games.)

My AA team is Hartford Yard Goats who will finish few games behind Portland, in third place of the Eastern.

        😀⚾

  3. The only Bug Light I’m familiar with is the little plug-in infrared blue thing that supposedly lures fruit flies to their death.

(Given that there are still dozens of fruit flies in the kitchen, its efficacy is questionable.)
