.
If you’re on Facebook you’ve seen them. Good looking, easy recipes people are always raving about.
They’re virtually irresistible, at least to me.
I save them, gather the ingredients and wait for the culinary magic to happen.
Problem is, it rarely does. Because while these recipes always look wonderful? They never are.
Yesterday I wasted time with this one:
.

.
Apple fritters!
What could go wrong?
.

.
Turns out, everything.
They didn’t look or taste like fritters…. the color was off, the taste was sub par, the texture unappealing.
They were so bad it was almost funny.
Time after time I tell myself not to bother with Facebook recipes. I know I’ll be disappointed. But then I see a new one… and I can’t help myself.
Hope springs eternal.
🥴
.
The main difference here is that finished product on their end is deep fried. Because in fact fritters are battered and fried. Talk about misleading, if anything you made an apple turnover.

Are they?
No wonder mine were awful!

Yeah. That recipe was a blatant lie. Maybe not even a turnover (which are made with puff pastry) maybe just a shit recipie for a mini apple pie.

The roasted chickpeas I got from a FB reel and those are delicious – hard to screw that up tho. I tried a yogurt bread – total yuck.

Listen to Mr. Pennsylvania, he knows what he’s talking about!
Actually, I just looked up a recipe in one of the Spenser novels that I know you’ve been reading by Robert B Parker. In the one tiled Cold Service he makes apple fritters, and although it’s not a traditional recipe, the way the instructions are woven into the story are simple enough for anyone to follow.
Yes, he uses oil to fry them in.
I searched for the book in my library app (Libby), then searched the book itself for the page where he cooks it, and it’s all there.
Report back. 😉

That’s one of the things I liked about the Spenser novels – reading about his cooking.

No way is it an apple fritter without frying. Maybe a giant scone? Sometimes I find a gem online, but usually It has to be from the NYT or Washington Post. Except that I canceled both of those subscriptions in fury during various election seasons.

The recipe you gave us foe angel food cake mix and a can of fruit pieces still goes over quite well, except the baking of it in a 9×13 pan. So we make it is smaller containers and it is much better. But love the taste.

Online recipes are always a hit and miss. I did try Jacques Pepin’s clam chowder which is excellent and easy to make. First hit in a long time.

I think Facebook recipes is a lot like online dating. You have to wade through a lot of muck to find anything good.

Growing up, my mom made the most delicious apple fritters ever. I haven’t had them in many years but am suddenly craving them. Next time she visits, I should beg her to make them!

Making these abominations has made me want some real fritters as well.
