News you can’t use.

Not useful, but hopefully humorous.

Me thinks the bar is pretty low for that particular award.

This implies the people of Arklow, Ireland have been swimming with floaters for quite some time.

A subject which does not bear thinking about.

Most excellent.

This is the very epitome of useless news.

  1. Having once nearly lost a pinkie toe, I read that story. I don’t recall much… I think he was young/teen, the toe floated in the bathwater, was it saved and reattached. But I could be wrong. I can’t remember what caused it to fall off.

  2. Re: the first story – Tom Lehrer sang, back int the mid-60s, “The breakfast garbage you throw out in Troy/They drink at lunch in Perth Amboy”. (West coast variant: “The breakfast garbage you throw into the bay/They drink at lunch in San Jose”).

Or, to be more specific re: floaters – the sanitary and storm sewer system are the same in San Francisco. During a big storm, the system is overwhelmed and raw sewage is dumped into the ocean. They lengthened the pipe to 4.5 miles so there are no floaters near the beach.

  3. This is why swimming in the Willamette River in Portland is a dicey proposition. Sewage frequently backs up into the river whenever there’s a heavy rain (and rain is one thing the PNW is known for).
