Our pets have always been full fledged family members. And while they’re not allowed on tables, bureaus or kitchen counters… neither is my husband, so fair is fair.

They can sit or sleep on anything we can, as evidenced by the photos of Lord Dudley Mountcatten I just took this morning.

What can I say?

The cat knows how to relax.

Needless to say, my answer to the question is a resounding yes.

  1. Relaxed eh, if i slept like that I’d fear falling on my head. Getting a digital dose of Dudley makes up for not seeing our boy Nigel while we vacation. We use the same friend for cat sitting ( he has two) but Nigel will greet him with a rub but then hiss. As for the funiture…idk he’s been practically eveywhere, so not an issue.

I was adamant that the cats not be allowed on the counters, and for many months, I sprayed them when they went up there (which was often), but after a while, after it was becoming clear that spraying was doing absolutely nothing to deter them, I decided I didn’t want to keep engaging in this negative aspect of our relationship, so I learned to live with it (and I disinfect often). The biggest problem is that they often HAVE to jump onto one side counter (which was always allowed) to access the mudroom where their litterbox is and where they are fed. It was probably confusing to be told “you can go on this counter, but not these counters.” I still deploy the sprayer when they claw the carpets or furniture, though. That’s not going away.

  3. Awwwe. This gave me a laugh seeing Lord Dudley like that. That is one cat relaxing big time. A good cat to learn lessons from in the art of relaxing.

    When used to have cats. I would allow on the on the sofa. And on the bottom of my bed only which had a blanket specifically for my cat to sleep on.
    The last two cats knew that only the blanket was the area of my bed allowed on.
    One cat once broke the rule while I was in the room. But when realise where she was, it was comical and I let that one slip. She made a den in the middle of my bed in my dressing gown. She was cocooned in it. Her head only sticking out to try and keep warm.
    Otherwise, that was the only time.
    My last two cats I had at different times were very good in understanding the boundary of where they could sleep on the bed and not a paw over.

    My cats were not allowed on kitchen worktops and they knew. I could close my kitchen off when not in therr. Which I did.

  6. Why would anyone keep their pets off the furniture? My cats always went wherever they wanted – almost pointless in trying to get them not to. Nowhere was off limits tho Frankie and I had some interesting conversations about her being on the stove….

  10. It’s about acceptance. When we’re not here they’re doing whatever they want. Our first cat, Julius, felled a fully loaded eight foot Christmas tree. I wanted to be mad but seeing him sitting next to his handiwork with that guilty dog look on his face made it all go away. Shit, now I’m gonna cry.
    Vinnie and Otto are explorers but they’re (Mostly) nimble and stealthy. They have been busted more than once examining Cathy’s holiday displays or messing around with the fringe on my Richie Sambora concho guitar strap but they have only broken one thing I can remember: A bone china mug I used to drink every cup of tea from for years. I replaced it with a stoneware one from Etsy that I could use to smash a windshield, problem solved.. OK, and’ Otto took out Cathy’s favorite high-capacity Martini glass. She was a bit put out but I’m looking on the bright side of life. Cathy’s got a birthday coming and by litle red devil is helping me out. What a good boy..

    1. Oh yes, we’ve a few perfectly decorated Xmas trees fall to feline hijinks. But it’s our fault bringing one into the house in the first place. Heck, one of them had a heretofore undiscovered bird nest in situ. What cat could resist that?

  11. We have the exact same rules: furniture good, tables and counters bad. My brother and SIL, on the other hand, let their multiple cats roam all over the kitchen table even when they’re eating. To each their own, I guess…

      1. Dunno if you were around in the days of Vox, but I posted one of my cats proudly sitting on a wingback chair that the cats had thrashed. Someone (no one ever took credit) turned the photo into a meme on Cute Overload or I Can Has Cheezburger that said, ” No, I *antiqued* it. Worth MOAR now!”
        It was sooooo bizarre to see that load and realize it was my house/chair/cat!!
