Not dead dogs, a motorcycle momma, and New Jersey flashbacks.

.

This first picture was on the Facebook page of the Island where I used to live… and it made me laugh.

.

.

It’s from a visiting veterinary service but look, we share a name. Though she definitely wears it better.

Also from the Island, a party invitation.

.

.

The ‘I’m Still Not Dead’ party. Wouldn’t want to miss that.

.

.

Believe it or not this ancient picture is of my husband’s mother on a Harley. That’s her driving the middle one. It was taken in 1944 and she was wearing a custom made white leather jacket.

What a hoot.

.

.

Our lawn is browning in weird spots thanks to the summer drought. His Lordship checked out the dead grass on a recent walk and alerted me to a disturbing fact.

.

.

The woodchucks have dug a burrow under the cement cover to our septic tank access.

This may not end well, for anyone.

🫤

In other news, I’ve discovered a funny Facebook page that reminisces about the good old days in the Garden State and it makes me miss my crazy childhood.

Jungle Habitat was bizarre. You paid admission and drove through the park in your car. You couldn’t get out and let me tell you…. as I kid? I definitely didn’t want to. I remember ostriches ferociously pecking at our windows, a baboon trying to rip off the windshield wipers and a chimpanzee masturbating on the hood of our station wagon. It was a strange form of family entertainment to say the least.

.

Cinnamon crumb coffee cake.

I buy it today, but it never tastes the same.

  1. Jim Breuer has a GREAT bit about one if those drive-thru safaris!!
Out here, ours was Lion Country Safari. I recall seeing a lioness get on the top of a car and cause it to crunch down a bit. Another time, an elephant got it’s tusks stuck in the wheel well of a VW Big and was lifting the car off the ground as it tried to free itself. I also remember the zebra-stripped jeeps of the employees who used bb guns to “discourage” bad behaviour by the animals. When the head if the lion pride, Frasier, died, he was buried on the hill with a gigantic cross that you could see from the freeway.

It later became a concert venue & water park. Now it’s homes.

    AWESOME white leather moto momma!!!

  2. Cathy and I got some hyper-maxi-turbo groundhog disturbing devices on Amazon that have made our groundhog problem go away. They’re ultrasonic so you can’t hear them unless you are close and listening for one and they’re solar powered so all you have to do is stick it in the ground and walk away.

  3. ha, I remember how that knife stayed in the box, especially growing up with 3 men-my dad, and 2 brothers, who were tall and hungry. My mom and I ate corners and I still do the same. Your husband had an interesting mom, riding a motorcycle. She was ahead of the riders.

  4. You mom-in-law’s pic reminds me not to take our grandmothers lightly. My husband’s grandmother could shoot using a rifle and revolver when she was a child. She was also called to catch snakes when they entered anyone’s house (pretty common in our port of the world).

    1. We forget they were young once too.
When my mom was dying at hospice I brought in many framed photos of her as a young woman and hung them on the walls. The nurses loved it. Said they never get to see that side of the patients they care for.

  5. I never thought about the knife in a box thing until now, but for sure, when we had Entenmann’s it DID seem like a knife was always ready and waiting in the box. Jungle Habitat was an ambitiously bad idea. Kudos to His Lordship for sniffing out that situation. Impressive detective!

  6. I have to agree – Entenmanns’s has a slightly off chemical taste to me nowadays. Whether it’s me or them, I don’t know. When I lived alone a fork was always left in the box of chocolate fudge cake…They don’t make Neapolitans anymore, or maybe they were called Metropolitans? I don’t remember but they were like giant raspberry zingers…my fav.

  7. Pantsaversary. Repantsing. That is too funny. Now I need to know the story!

    Damn woodchucks—what the chuck!?

Love the old photo of your MIL—she sounds like a badass woman!

There’s a place in West Palm Beach called Lion Country Safari where you drive through and the animals come up to the car. Lions. Giraffes. Zebras. Ostrich. You name it. It’s been open as long as I’ve been alive; I hope to take my littles there one day.
