The big day was yesterday.

Up at 3:00 am to shower, pack a lizardless bag and drink that nasty clear Ensure. Blech.

Arrived at hospital 6:00 am. It’s small as far as hospitals go but I love the larger staff to patient ratio and they’ve always treated us well.

Given a private corner room with en suite bath and peaceful wooded view. Ooh la la. I felt special.

Immediately began putting my male nurse to work.

.

.

Ha!

He’s going to be a busy boy for a while.

Surgery at 8:00 am and all went well. Not to mention quickly. Supposed to take an hour and a half but I was done in 45 minutes. Thankfully everything else looked good and they were able to perform just the partial replacement.

.

.

Laid in bed for a while to let the spinal wear off.

.

.

My husband flipped out when he had a spinal a few years ago, feeling paralyzed and not able to move. For me? It was lovely. First time in 6 years I didn’t have knee pain.

😊

Once that exited my system it was physical and occupational therapy in the afternoon to make sure I could get around and dress myself. My leg buckled once ( a terrifying, out of control feeling I don’t recommend ) so they told me to lock my knee and step heel to toe when using the walker.

Bing, bam, boom… we were out the door at 4:30pm.

Home at 5:15 where I exited the car, used the walker to hobble to the kitchen landing, took one step up and felt my knee buckle again. Thank god the husband was right behind me because it was like someone pulled my plug. No control, just rubber. Bam! I crumpled and the husband caught me.

Thinking this knee surgery stuff sucks so far, I made it to the couch with my elevated wedge pillow and an ice pack.

.

.

I think I live here now.

No pain… yet… but the stupid nerve block makes my calf so numb and weak I can’t lift it straight out or up. it feels paralyzed.

.

.

Bought this silly leg lifter thing a while back thinking I’d never use it… but it’s a life saver right now.

Until the block wears off my husband is on 24/7 call. He’s been good but I don’t think he realized how many little things I do around the house every day….. and now that’s he’s doing them? I chuckle as I lie on the couch and give instructions..

😉

The sweetest part?

He had these delivered to our house while we were gone and I found them on the doorstop when we got home.

.

.

Beautiful and perfect colors for the season.

He’s a good guy.

I think I’ll keep him.

❤️

  1. Congratulations on leaping over that hurdle (don’t try that at home just yet). Your situation kind of reminds me of climbing a mountain. When you reach the top it’s tempting to think it’s over and you’ve done it, but there’s still a long slog left. I hope your recovery goes as smoothly as the surgery did. Maybe your constant presence on the couch will lure Dudley to snuggle you a lot. Flowers, attentive partners, and cat cuddles can only speed recovery.

  2. What a lovely bouquet!
I wish they’d kept you till the nerve block wore off, or you at least felt more control over your lower leg! I love me stupid leg lifting strap!!

I’m glad you only got a partial. I’m sending good juju for a fast & easy recovery!!

      1. Same. I’ve also had lots of rejections when asking for help. I definitely could have used more. Hell… 4 days in the hospital and I had zero visitors!

Wishing you minimal pain and a fast recovery!!

  3. Wow, good news! A partial sounds better than total so maybe you will be on your feet sooner than later! You have a good nurse! My hip and leg (right) dragged and felt like dead wood for awhile. I understand that. Our surgeries were different but in the end it is still surgery and you feel good it is over. Wishing you the best.

    1. Mike is taking us today to get a much needed pedicure and for me, a mani also. My toenails on my foot are two inches long as I haven’t been able to bend more past 90 degrees for like the last 9 weeks. Good treat!

      1. That’s a good way to see it, as a hurdle! And then onwards. Meanwhile, rest and hydrate. I also have a bit of a sore throat afterwards, so I had lots of hot liquids and cough drops.

  4. Congrats. The knee buckling should stop once the block wears off completely. Nothing silly about the leg lifter (AKA dog leash) and, once you’re healed, you can use it to walk an imaginary dog and make the neighbors think you’re crazy.

The surgeon’s job is done – now yours starts. Best of luck! (P.S. The x-ray looks great!)

    1. I didn’t like that buckling feeling.. at all. No control over your own body is frightening.
And hey. I like the imaginary dog walking idea.
Very Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil-esque.
      👍

  5. I’m so glad that it’s over, and now the hard work begins. I’m sure you will get right back up and do extremely well and heal fast. It’s getting up and moving that’s hard at first, but then you’ll be up and down those Barn Mahal stairs for an adult beverage in no time 😉

  6. I am technically on break, but I do look post headlines from blogging friends and comment when what happens is a little of of the ordinary, like, say, knee surgery. I hope the recovery isn’t too bad and the operation will be a complete success. Lovely to have those flowers waiting for you. Yes, a he’s a keeper.

  7. So happy to hear the surgery is in the rear view, and while you’re gonna have to work out to ensure the surgery works out, it has to be a huge relief getting the operation done at long last. I agree with The Huntress’ comment. I anticipate you’ll feel more confident and stable in no time. I also anticipate His Lordship will figure things out. Your hubby sounds like he’s got the Casa well under control…with your direction, of course.😉

  8. So glad to hear the surgery went smoothly and is in the rear-view mirror, Rivergirl! Being pain-free for the first time in six years must feel amazing, even with the wobbly knee bucklings and numb calf! I got such a laugh out of your exchange with ianmdudley—your husband is definitely a keeper for stepping up with those gorgeous autumn flowers and 24/7 caretaking. As bruce@ssa and thehuntress915 mentioned, you’ll be navigating the Casa and those Barn Mahal stairs in no time once rehab gets underway. Rest up on the couch!

    1. I’m interested to see what the total bill will be. But thankfully we have great coverage.
Ten years ago when I had a hysterectomy the cost was $21,000. I paid $12.
I’m guessing my portion will be higher now.

  9. I was thinking about you yesterday, wondering if all went well.

Glad to know you have it behind you, now for the healing part. Patience!!! He can do everything, it’s just gonna take longer or you will have to repeat directions. LOL.

I hope the pain isn’t terrible!! XO
