.
Day 3 of partial knee replacement.
Horribly swollen, stiff, uncomfortable and starting to show some bruising.
.

.
Last day with the sexy compression stocking and I’m doing the best I can to remain positive. I ice, I elevate, I hobble around with the walker I said I wouldn’t use.
Ha!
Shows what I know. That thing is my best friend right now.
Home physical therapist came for the first time today and damn. Just that little bit of exercise knocked me for a loop. Tired doesn’t begin to describe it.
The nerve block hasn’t worn off yet, which is a bit unusual but not unheard of. They say 4-48 hours and I’m past 80, but if it keeps the pain at bay I won’t complain about the constant numbness.
My husband? He’s really stepped up.
When I had my hysterectomy 11 years ago he was a lousy nurse so I had my doubts this time around, but the man has been wonderful. He brings me everything I need, feeds me, makes sure I don’t fall, keeps tracks of my meds and yes…
He’s doing housework.
.

.
Be still my heart.
I’ve waited 42 years for this!
He vacuumed, swept, dusted, does the dishes and ran a load of laundry. He scrubbed the shower and feeds the cat. He even took everything out of the fridge and washed it clean.
This is (almost) better than sex.
My recovery won’t be pleasant…. but it’s wonderful to have a caring partner help me through the tough parts.
❤️
.
He’s a good guy. I hope your recovery goes well. Do all the things they tell you to do.

He is.
And I am.

I know you never doubted that he would do all of this and more…love is in the details. You’ve probably spoiled each other through the years – and sometimes that means feeding the cat and vacuuming.

I’ve acted as nurse many more times for him. This is really only my second issue in 42 years. He got off easy.

That is so sweet! One secret I have always known is that my husband is a wonderful cook and baker, so I did get a little spoiled. We share cooking dinner. I kept it a secret as a few girlfriends seemed a little pissed off at me! It will get better.

We’ve been living on leftovers and take out. The one thing he doesn’t do is cook.

As we get a little older, we like take out more and last minute improvisation. Both of us are good cooks, but sometimes the urge to cook gets less and less with time. I did like him doing all the grocery shopping and most of the cleaning, also! I did not want to shirk all my things to do. He is a good one!

I feel for people who have to go through these recoveries alone. We’re both very lucky.

You are correct! I can’t imagine being alone which is why you hope to have a few loyal friends nearby but you do need someone the first few weeks.

I put a case of bottled water next to my bed and I know I had snacks (protein bars and such) so that I pretty much only got up to use the bathroom or the cats.

That doesn’t sound like much fun.
I’m very glad I have someone to help in these early days..

Wonderful that you are getting that much help. Hope the healing happens quickly and you are back to better than normal soon.

Thank you!
Though at this point I’d just settle for normal.

Oh no doubt!!! Hope it’s a lot better before that nerve block wears off.

That’s making me a bit nervous. I’ve heard horror stories that the pain slams you up against a wall all at once.

Ouch! That doesn’t sound too pleasant!

No. It really doesn’t…

I hope your reaction is like mine: A lot of worry over nothing. Sensation returned, but not pain. Well, pain no worse than before surgery

That’s my hope.

Dang. I was laid up twice for quite a while and my house didn’t get clean! Glad there’s an up side to all this.

It’s been a surprise for me as well. The really funny part? My husband makes an extra effort and spruces up the place a bit before the home pt guy gets here.
Hilarious!

I’m surprised that, like me, you’re having a loooong response to the nerve block. Mine was treated as both highly uncommon and no big deal. For me, sensations started returning on day 7.
The top of my knee remains “numb” as a result of scar tissue, but I no longer notice it.
I think it was a week after surgery when I realized I could quit using the walker and switch to a cane & light knee brace.
Ohhhh…. to have an assistant housekeeper. I’m envious!!
I hope you’re feeling better soon!!

I was told to massage the incision (after it’s fully closed) with vitamin e oil twice a day to break up the scar tissue. I’m not as vain as I used to be, but still hope it’s not too horrible.

Almost better than sex? Do I need to tap my nearest knee surgeon on the shoulder and say, “I’ll have what she’s having”?

If you have a spouse who cleans the house for the first time in 42 years?
Yes.

What a wonderful update, Rivergirl! Seeing your husband step up and take care of everything from the laundry to feeding the cat is so sweet (and well-earned after you nursing him over the years!).

Without a caring partner, surgery recovery isn’t possible. Did they give you any type of compression ice machine? My husband rented the NICE machine for a few months, but he was also given (sold) one that we fill with ice and water and has compression called BREG Polar Care Wave.

Yes. They gave me a cylindrical like cooler machine with compression sleeve, but honestly I’m just using my flexible freezer pack. It’s working well.

Maybe it’s so good you’ll get your other knee replaced??
