Trash pandas

.

Along with all our other wild visitors we have raccoons, but since they arrive at night I’m rarely able to photograph them.

.

.

Until the other evening when a pair showed up before sunset.

.

.

They really are characters.

.

.

Such expressive faces…

.

.

And those dexterous little paws!

.

.

These little fatties shimmy right up the center pole, knock the suet cages to the ground then empty them at their leisure. Those paws can open anything.

.

.

I was hoping they’d do it while I was filming but no such luck. Seeing their big butts hanging upside down eating the orioles grape jelly is a riot.

.

.

😊

.

Birdseed bandit.

.

I’ve been waking up in the morning to completely empty bird feeders, which is odd because I refill them every evening. Usually this means the deer are back… but we’ve only seen one or two wandering around lately. Then last night, I flipped on the light at 10:00pm.

.

.

Busted!

.

.

The seed thief caught in the act.

.

.

If you think those pudgy raccoons aren’t limber, I’ve got news for you …

.

.

They can shimmy up and down poles as well as a squirrel and hang by two feet at will.

.

.

Excuse the poor quality pics, I was shooting through the window.

.

.

When Fatso finished emptying the feeders, he plopped down on the ground with the skunks.

.

.

Who were none to happy to share and gave him their business ends.

.

.

Cute little masked devils.

💕

.

Sharing the bounty.

.

I’ve eaten apples.

I’ve baked with apples.

I’ve given apples to friends, to neighbors, to a pig, to workers and to strangers.

The deer have eaten apples. The raccoons have eaten apples. Even the fox have eaten apples.

And yet…

.

.

We’re still loaded with fruit. There was only one thing left to do.

Gather up enough to fill the trunk of our car and take them to a wildlife rehabilitation shelter in the neighboring town.

.

.

Oh. My. God.

.

.

I fell in love a dozen times over.

.

.

And my heart broke a dozen times as well.

.

.

Abused animals. Sick animals. Animals that had been hit with a car on purpose.

.

.

How can people be so cruel.

.

.

If you’ve ever looked into a porcupine’s eyes and heard his little squee ( it sounds just like a baby)…. you know what I’m talking about.

.

.

More marshmallow please.

.

.

Seeing these little guys chow down on our apples?

Almost brought me to tears.
