While cruising through these beauties in Sedona, we spotted our first cowboy.

Okay, he was the only cowboy we ever spotted….

And he probably wasn’t even a real cowboy, because I doubt cowboys live in houses like this…..

Our next adventure took us north to Flagstaff on a wonderful scenic road over the mountains and through Oak Creek Canyon.

We’d had a little rain the night before, and when you get a little rain in these parts? You get floods, road washouts and water pouring out of cliff sides.

 

 

Route 89A is 29 miles of twisting, turning, switchback filled climbing.

And well worth taking if you’re ever in the area.

After Flagstaff, we headed east…. where we saw this.

And a whole lotta this.

Which was basically nothing, for miles on end.

I have no freakin’ clue!

But clearly it was one of those marvelous old roadside attractions from back in the 50’s or 60’s. You know the ones. The World’s Largest Ball of Twine? The donut shop shaped like a donut?

I’d totally make a pilgrimage to see those.

I mean really….

  6. Wonderful images, humor and descriptions. I recall some of these landmarks and the landscape as well. I attempted to ride much of Route 66 and saw many of these nostalgic places. Beautiful area for sure. 🙂

      3. I only had a day in Sedona and didn’t get to explore it much. I enjoyed Tombstone and didn’t get to go back to Tucson. I guess I have unfinished opportunities there. 😉

  7. I-70 across Kansas is 425 miles of all that east of Flagstaff stuff you just captured up there. The one thing I remember is the giant concrete sunflower monument at one of the rest stops… and that’s only because it was covered almost completely with some swarm of strange bugs neither I nor my sisters could (or wanted to) identify. I’m probably lucky I wasn’t eaten alive…

  9. I’da stopped there. I’m that kinda gal.
    Also, we used to have a restaurant called The Tepee. As as kid, I loved to go there — it was a diner in the shape of… a tepee! I knew you’d never guess.

  10. Okay, that’s it!!! I will not, I won’t, I can’t look at another rock, mountain or stone until I SEE FOOD! FOOD! FOOD!! I mean, come on, you didn’t even go into those fascinating places like Dutch Haven Restaurants!!!
