Arizona red rocks.
Because they’re gorgeous….
And I can.
While cruising through these beauties in Sedona, we spotted our first cowboy.
Okay, he was the only cowboy we ever spotted….
And he probably wasn’t even a real cowboy, because I doubt cowboys live in houses like this…..
But hey –
My post, my delusion.
Our next adventure took us north to Flagstaff on a wonderful scenic road over the mountains and through Oak Creek Canyon.
We’d had a little rain the night before, and when you get a little rain in these parts? You get floods, road washouts and water pouring out of cliff sides.
Route 89A is 29 miles of twisting, turning, switchback filled climbing.
And well worth taking if you’re ever in the area.
After Flagstaff, we headed east…. where we saw this.
And this.
And a whole lotta this.
Which was basically nothing, for miles on end.
Until…
Until…
We saw this.
What is it?
I have no freakin’ clue!
But clearly it was one of those marvelous old roadside attractions from back in the 50’s or 60’s. You know the ones. The World’s Largest Ball of Twine? The donut shop shaped like a donut?
I’d totally make a pilgrimage to see those.
I mean really….
Who wouldn’t have wanted a Brontosaurus burger?
Or a piece of Shoo Fly Pie served from inside a windmill.
The giant bug is open?
Let’s go!
I was born in the wrong decade….
Because come on, that’s pure gold.
But alas, whatever this was….
It was neglected, abandoned and unloved…
And for sale!
A bygone era brought back to life?
The husband said –
But oh..
Think of the blogging possibilities.
Needs a bit more blue and purple…
Green and yellow too. 😉

The defunct business? Or Arizona in general…?

Haha, I was talking about Arizona. LoL

That building was intriguing. Keep after your husband and maybe that could end up being your retirement: running a little whatever business out there in that…thing.

Need to find out what it is first. Hard to advertise and market it when I’d have no idea what it is I’m running. Round teepee? Giant head with a Mohawk?
😉

Can you write a blog about rocks please and include some photos of rocks please. Like you used to do.

No worries… I might have a few more rocks in my arsenal. I am disappointed you didn’t enjoy the giant bug though.

I barely noticed the bug to be honest because I was so hypnotised by rocks.

Completely understandable.

All that and not one jackalope? What kind of tourist do we have today?

There was a severe jackalope shortage during our trip. Tres disappointing….

Wonderful images, humor and descriptions. I recall some of these landmarks and the landscape as well. I attempted to ride much of Route 66 and saw many of these nostalgic places. Beautiful area for sure. 🙂

Thanks!
It was my first time in that part of the country… but hopefully not my last.

I know what you mean. I need to get back to Arizona again also. 🙂

I was totally enchanted with Sedona. The rest of Arizona? Once is enough…

I only had a day in Sedona and didn’t get to explore it much. I enjoyed Tombstone and didn’t get to go back to Tucson. I guess I have unfinished opportunities there. 😉

It’s definitely worth a return trip. We were there 2 weeks and still had a list of places we missed.

For sure. Yes, you had some great opportunities during the two weeks. Ideally, I would like to venture the trails at Sedona; but maybe one day. 🙂

Go off season like we did. Hardly any crowds…

I-70 across Kansas is 425 miles of all that east of Flagstaff stuff you just captured up there. The one thing I remember is the giant concrete sunflower monument at one of the rest stops… and that’s only because it was covered almost completely with some swarm of strange bugs neither I nor my sisters could (or wanted to) identify. I’m probably lucky I wasn’t eaten alive…

Giant bug covered flowers? I’m in!

There’s a reason that it’s both neglected and “for sale.” Just saying.

I’da stopped there. I’m that kinda gal.
Also, we used to have a restaurant called The Tepee. As as kid, I loved to go there — it was a diner in the shape of… a tepee! I knew you’d never guess.

Okay, that’s it!!! I will not, I won’t, I can’t look at another rock, mountain or stone until I SEE FOOD! FOOD! FOOD!! I mean, come on, you didn’t even go into those fascinating places like Dutch Haven Restaurants!!!

That’s because they don’t exist anymore. I pulled the images off Google!! And there will be food very soon. Be patient.
