I’m just going to say this once.

And I don’t want to start a partisan political fight.

But I’m getting tired of people snarkily saying, “You know that’s not going to protect you.” every time I go out in public with my cloth face mask firmly in place.

Yes, I know it’s not going to protect me.… but it’s going to protect you against airborne infected droplets in case I’m asymptomatic, which apparently many of us are.

I protect you, and I don’t think it’s too much to ask that you protect me… and by default my older husband who has 3 major underlying health conditions that would make catching Covid 19 a possible death sentence. I’m not an alarmist, or a panicker. I’m level headed and calm, but when it comes to my husband’s life? I’m not taking chances.

 

 

 

 

I get that the economy can’t be shut down indefinitely. I understand people are suffering, and if I could trust them to protect others? I would have no problem opening businesses. But a lot of the people I know who are out there protesting in large unprotected groups have jobs they can work from home and steady incomes.

They’re just upset they can’t go out and play.

Pubs. In Ireland!

If the Irish can stop consuming their pints in public? I think Americans can deal with a little piece of cloth if it helps save lives.

And to those who say the crisis isn’t that serious because they don’t personally know anyone who’s ill? We’re relatively lucky in Maine, we have a low contraction and death rate, but even here…. in my small rural town? I know people. Our neighbor who lives behind us has it. Our neighbor to the left’s parents have it, one severe enough to require hospitalization.

It’s here.

There are no sympathy cards because there are too many deaths. If that isn’t the definition of serious, I don’t know what is.

  2. Yes. Very much yes. They seem to think it’s some sort of oppression and infringement of freedom. Perhaps it’s the bleach they drink.

      1. Well, exactly, a virus isn’t going to stop and pass comment on you needing a haircut or what you think of anything at all before it infects and possibly kills you.

  3. Amen sister! I don’t understand why everything in the country these days has to be us vs. them. You would think a pandemic would be one thing we could unite against.

  5. The lack of understanding of why we’re wearing masks is in itself, very hard to understand. They’ve said this since the moment they realized asymptomatic people could spread the virus.

  7. I don’t think the lockdowns will help. It is a pandemic, meaning that the virus is going to be with us for a good long while and everyone at some point is going to be exposed to it.
    But yeah. Reasonable prophylactic precautions are in order such as masks and such. But staying home is merely going to prolong the inevitable.
    Not very comforting, I know …

    1. No, I realize lockdowns aren’t a long term solution. But imagine how over run the hospitals would have been if we hadn’t. Masks are just an easy way to protect others, I don’t understand the problem.

  8. And my snappy response is what part of the details zipped right by your attention span ? The crowed bar translates into the swamped backed up beyond capacity ER with medical staff at the end of their rope. With medical supplies exhausted and freezer trucks substituting for morgues. So no the mask is not going to protect me completely. And this is not a race to see who can get on the ventilator first. Be my guest if you are in that big of a hurry. Me I prefer the sight of a nearly empty ER and bored EMS workers washing their EMS truck. Just sayin…

  10. I’ve had some wonderful times in Irish pubs and I’ve learned from them that difficult times prompt creative solutions–which is why the Irish might be some of the most creative people around. In fact it wouldn’t surprise me if the original inventor of the video conference was Irish. Who else could come up with creative ways to be together while staying apart?

  12. Given the high number of infections and death where you live, why wouldn’t you wear a mask? Every little act is better than none.

    1. I believe it.
      My SIL, who has COPD, was hospitalized and put on a ventilator in early Feb. We thought it was just her condition flaring up…. but now? Who knows.

  14. I’m glad that you’re wearing a mask and ignore those snarky comments. It baffles me that the powers that be aren’t communicating the benefits that come from wearing a mask. As you say, it’s to protect OTHERS. Here in Thailand, and most of Asia it seems, this is perfectly understood and 99% of the people wear them (a possible reason our infection rates are much lower). Keep wearing your mask and take care.
