The visiting pair of mallard ducks hasn’t been spotted at Casa River for a few weeks now… so I figured it was getting too dry and they’d moved on.
Until the other day when I was out mowing the front lawn and saw this:
.

.
Momma duck and 13 babies!
.

.
She sashayed across the lawn and headed right for the road … in front of an oncoming car which had me ditching the mower and running into the street waving my arms like a crazy person.
.

.
She tried crossing three times and three times I had to stop traffic only to have her duck ( pun intended ) back on the lawn.
.

.
Fourth time was vehicle free.
Momma and babies made it safely across.
.
Hooray! But they will probably be back soon. Watch out for them, please.

I’m just glad I was there to act as crossing guard.

You may want to consider painting a crosswaddle on the street, along with an appropriate sign, to warn approaching motorists (assuming Maine drivers pay attention to such things)..

We live in a rural area so speed isn’t usually a problem. Unfortunately our house is in the middle of one the rare straightaways on a twisty turny road and therefore often used as a passing zone.

Hope the drivers at least smiled!

One was a bearded man in a giant pick up truck. He did not seem amused…

Do the ducklings have an assigned place in line or do they change positions?

They were on shuffle.

The ducks around us seem to have grasped the idea of staying in their lane, but the geese in these parts feel the roads are just one big crosswalk. Fortunately, most all drivers I’ve seen are very patient. When baby geese are involved, the geese always seem to have mom or dad in the front, with the other taking up the rear, and making sure the little ones march in between them.

That’s a good plan. Momma duck was on her own and not looking very comfortable with the responsibility.

Thank you for looking out for them!

Usually a baker’s dozen applies to donuts, not ducklings.

It was that day. The neighbors probably think I’m a raving loon.
