A tearful goodbye.

After 13 years of faithful service… it’s time to say goodbye to our beloved washer and dryer.

My husband (who DOES NOT shop for anything other than antiques) stood in line outside, in the cold, at 2:00am on Black Friday in 2010 to purchase this ( ultra fancy for it’s day) set as a Christmas present for yours truly.

I didn’t need or even want a new set at the time, but it was almost half price and he was thrilled with the deal.

Fast forward 13 years and the dryer (otherwise known as Lord Dudley’s bird watching perch) is kaput. It’s been acting up for the past few months… running one day but not the next… and after having two repairman unable to find the problem, it’s time to bid them a fond farewell.

So we shopped.

(The husband’s good friend just got Covid so his mask paranoia is temporarily back.)

After checking the big box stores and the small mom and pop stores, we played Goldilocks and chose a set from a medium sized Maine store.

We could have taken them home today, but of course I didn’t want blue.

.

So we special ordered the graphite gray.

.

.

Billed as “ The smartest washer in it’s class” I wondered what that entailed. A diploma? A degree? A doctorate?

Turns out smart means Alexa…

Sorry. I don’t care how smart it is…. I’m not talking to my washing machine.

  5. 16 years here, and nary a peep of destruction so far. 🤞
    But on hubby’s mask-wearing obsession, Gail and I have faithfully worn our masks since the start of Covid. No Covid. No colds! No nothing for all these years. Until a recent trip south to Lethbridge last week. I went out without a mask just once, I was in a rush and it was just in and out of a store. Less than 2 minutes. I am now in bed with the most horrible cold — head and body. 5 days lying in bed already, and counting! Gail is coming down with it too!
    Screw Covid! Masks are a healthy choice! If you stop hearing from me, you’ll know why!!!!!

    1. FYI: Being exposed to germs keeps our immunity systems strong.

      By wearing masks for the past 3 years, you most likely prevented your body from building up ANY immunity to common colds, etc. Thus, your 2 minute run into the store was enough to land you in bed for 5 days . . . and counting.

      1. Thanks for the good wishes. The thing is, due to many medical issues, I am immuno-compromised. Having gone over 3 years without getting sick was a glorious holiday for me. For people with good immunity masks are optional. In my case they are mandatory. It was my own stupidity, and haste, that took me into that store maskless. I can catch anything that comes within a mile of me, and over my later adult years I was often down and out with colds, flus, etc. Masks are the best thing that ever happened to me. I had no idea i could go even 2 months without catching something. To go over 3 years wzs pretty much a miracle!

      1. BIg brpther can watch me all he wants, that’s how exciting my life is. I’ll bore him to death.
        But living in a small town, population 3500, nobody is watching. Our stores don’t even have cameras in them.
        What I say on the internet could get me o to trouble with someone, but I have invited the Feds to come visit me many times, and no one ever shows up. No one is willing to travel this far just to harass me.
        I guess for city dwellers life is always on camera now. Small towns can’t afford it.

      4. Glad you’re alive! I could get myself in trouble for my outspokenness too…. Now, I’m late to getting a degree, and studying Geography – more for interest and stimulating my brain (and something to do) as I’m unlikely to get a job now, having passed 50. What state is it you live in? I was doing a QGIS tutorial the other day and it was focused on Nanaimo BC. I love looking at maps and doing Google Earth tours of places. Armchair travel.

      5. In Canada we call our smaller legal districts provinces and territories. I live in the Province of Alberta, just south of the NorthWest Terriitories at 59.5° N lattitude, though I cannot remember the the longitude. The town is called High Level. I cannot tell you the address, but at the right magnification I live in the only pie-shaped yard with trees along the back fence which runs along the main almost-circular roadway in the town. There is usually a dark red car parked in the front driveway.
        I completed my BSW degree when I was 57 years old, Hope you get your degree. It is never to late to start a new profession.

      6. God love ya! I didn’t want that much information, but I’ll have a look at Alberta’s northwest territories. Something about cold snowy latitudes really appeals to me. Must be a past life thing. Or just that snow and vast extremes are lovely.

      7. Lol. Alberta is a province. The NorthWest Territiries is a Territory, which is a large land mass but with a population density too small to become a province. We border each other on Alberta’s north. Their northern border is the Arctic Ocean.
        If you lived here in a previous life, you would miss it.

  7. When ever they “smartest”, they mean “way more things that can malfunction” and “this thing has the capability to take over your other appliances”. It bosses Alexa around. Anyway, not liking blue now has a term attached to it: “Blueaphonia”, and has been determined to be divisive to the other colors in the Crayola box.

  13. I talk to my appliances all the time, but they never respond. Hence, they’re not smart! Congratulations. I hope you love the set. The gray is nice, but I like the blue too!! How fun to have choices other than white. or stainless these days.

    1. I was surprised at the blue, which probably would have blended with my colors but the husband hated it. As for smart appliances, I just hope it’s not snarky. One of me is enough.

      1. My car’s over 20 and I love it, but the driver’s side window electrics went kaput. I had it fixed once, then it went on the blink again soon after and I refused to get it fixed again, so I got them to stick a bit of wood in there to keep the window up. Now if it was manually winding the story would be different….

      2. We had a truck like that. Fixed the passenger side 3 times and it still wouldn’t work. Thankfully it was older and had those little triangle windows that opened.
