Lord Dudley Mountcatten is an exemplary feline with very few destructive habits. When he first agreed to cohabitate with us and let the husband and I be his slaves… he did however choose one chair to sharpen the royal claws. Not wanting to have shredded upholstery, his minions shopped for an alternative.
But when… after 4 replacement items were tried and rejected … an acceptable substitute scratching post was purchased? He transferred activity there and has been happily loyal to his sisal ever since.
As you can see, His Lordship gives it a workout. Which is why he has to have one with a weighted base so it doesn’t tip over and scare him back to the chair.
.

.
His servant has repeatedly glued, tied, cut and attempted to fix the damaged areas but came to the conclusion a new post must be purchased.
.

.
Problem is, the favorite can no longer be found.
Oh! The horror!
After repeated shopping trips to every pet store in the area, Amazon was checked. And May I say… the selection was impressive. Had His Lordship wanted a palm tree …
.

.
An orange…
.

.
Or even a cactus it would have been no problem.
.

.
Though I can’t say that cat looked too thrilled.
.

.
A cherry? Sure…
.

.
A giraffe that could swallow Lord Dudley whole?
.

.
It could be his for a mere $265.
Hell, there was even a carrot.
.

.
But what there wasn’t …. was the only plain, square, weighted base scratching post he wants.
.

.
The search continues.
.
Mrs. Chess and I have often been vexed when we try to find a replacement identical to the item we can no longer use, only to find it is no longer available. Frustrating. I was taking a drink of coffee when I came across that giraffe, and almost drowned in my laughter. I love that giraffe, but I suspect His Lordship would not.

For $265 I’m afraid His Lordship will not be finding out…

Our cats all love the rope scratching posts, which is why we have a number of them around the house. But when they are too far gone, I take all the old rope off and replace it with new 3/8″ rope, which suits them just fine. It is not an easy job, but I have gotten quite good at it over the years. One half inch staple to start, and a glue gun every four or five rounds, and the cats are happy. But no cheating. They mainly use only about 6″ of the rope from the top down, but they won’t use them if I only put rope in that area. It needs to be from top to bottom.
And aside from the cost of my labour, do-it-yourself repairs are a hekkuva lot cheaper than what they are charging for machine-made scratchers these days. And it is a labour of love…

It might come to that. Though I doubt I’d do as good a job at the refitting.

My thought was the same as rawgod – take off the old rope and re-fit it with a length of newly purchased rope. Surely a wonderful project for the hubs to take on???

My grandcat (Zeus, my sons cat) had the same problem. Or should I say my son couldn’t find a replacement scratch post for his owner. So my son opted to keep replacing the rope on the scratch post. It lasts him about six months before he has to replace the rope again. Charlie just uses a carpeted scratch post, he’s not picky, lol.

It took me 10 varieties of litter to find one His Highness would actually poop in…. scratching post finickiness shouldn’t surprise me.

Wow your cat really does come from a line of royalty. Charlie doesn’t care what kind of litter, food or even scratch post. He’s common stock feline, lol.

Oh, food. The amount I’ve wasted could feed a small country.

They’re so cute to look at on a computer, but I definitely wouldn’t want any of them in my living room. What decor-killers!

And of course the living room is where it has to be placed. We need to put Joanna Gaines on a new design project… Magnolia scratching posts.

And anything to make cat trees less hideous would be welcome as well.

1/4″ Sisal rope. Under $10 at amazon and includes the benefit of giving your hubs something to do for a while. Unwind, rewind, done!
