.
Let’s start with my candy cane dianthus.
.

.
It may not taste like peppermint, but it always puts on a show.
.

.
My lovely line of what once were bushy, thick and healthy marigolds has been nibbled to shreds. Don’t listen to gardeners who tell you nothing will eat them. The woodchucks are dining al fresco as we speak.
I realize I haven’t done an update on my husband’s sister lately. There’s never anything good to report, but life goes on.
.

.
Here’s a sad picture… my husband cutting up the food his sister won’t eat at the nursing home. Hard to believe she’s the younger sibling of the two. There’s no good news here, she’s terminal and hanging on even though she doesn’t want to. Her breathing is labored and painful and yet she tries to bum cigarettes from nurses and other patients. We visit once or twice a week and try to be cheerful but making conversation with someone who’s every other sentence is about wanting to die is heartbreaking. It’s such a sad situation and at this point, though I hate to admit it… her passing will almost be a blessing.
On a happier note I bring you squirrel splooting.
.

.
Yes, that’s what it’s called when squirrels lay flat on their bellies to cool off.
.

.
In other news our local pub has a bartender who experiments with alcohol infusions. I’m happy to say the strawberry mint rum was a winner and makes a fabulous mojito.
.

.
I should know, I had three… alongside some wonderful warm pretzel bites with beer cheese.
👍
.
Looks like a grey splooting, not a red. If there is a grey, Ms Red should be long gone.
Does America not allow assisted suicide? It sounds like the SIL is beyond enjoying what life she has left in her. Assisted suicide would be freeing for her, and you and hubby.

Momma Red happily munches right alongside the greys.
I believe Maine does have some sort of death with dignity law but I don’t think SIL meets the criteria yet.

So sorry to read about your husband’s sister. I’ve been in that situation and it is heart-wrenching (mine was blessedly short though, and the person got their wish sooner than later). This is a case where a medically-assisted death would be a blessing.

I’m not sure how that works here. No one has brought it up…

I planted marigolds because I was told it was a hearty plant/flower. I managed to kill those too, but my co-worker Phoebe, who has a fabulous green thumb, told me to plant Lantana’s because those can survive my murderous thumb. You captured your hubs in such a sweet moment even though his sister isn’t willing to help herself. Your garden always looks superb, green and lush and squirrels splooting…lol.

I can’t have lantanas. The woodchucks love them…

Apparently the berries are poisonous, how do the chuckers still eat them and survive?

They only eat the leaves.

And how do you know your Candy Cane Plant doesn’t taste like Peppermint? Such a shame about SIl. I’m Sorry. Thanks for explaining the term ‘Splooting’; I have been wondering what that term meant and hearing it, a lot.

There’s a whole lot of splooting going on right now. Add the record breaking heat to my menopausal hot flashes and I’m ready to sploot as well.

My dianthus have never done that well. 😦
So sorry about your S-I-L. You guys are dedicated family.
Mmm, pretzel bites and beer cheese. Yes, please.

The dianthus lives at the whims of the woodchucks taste buds. So far, so good.

Your dianthus is delightful. That’s a sweet picture of your husband taking care of his sister, even if she won’t eat. What would summer be without a sploot or two? It’s 10:16 AM, but I could use a mojita right about now! Mona

It’s never too early for a summer mojito.

Strawberry mint rum? Now that’s inventive! Rum doesn’t get often get special treatment like that, unless you call a can of Coke special treatment.

I wouldn’t have put that together either, but it was fabulous.

I’m so sorry for your SIL and for you guys having to witness such sadness. This is a lesson for all of us to take care of our health as it’s our most precious commodity.
Splooting. I feel you squirrel…I want to sploot on the daily!

It is sad. But she’s been self destructive for decades so not really surprising.
And I have to say… with the massive heat waves y’all are having I’m very glad we don’t live in the south anymore.
