.
I often complain about things in the kitchen. The toaster that doesn’t toast evenly, the dirty spoons my husband leaves on the counter and more often than not … the fact that we pay more for food each day but seem to get less.
I understand prices rise, and though I never like it… I expect it. What I don’t expect is to start cooking, reach for the 16 ounce can (box or bag of whatever) only to find it’s shrunken to 14. Two ounces short of what I need forcing me to downsize my recipe or worse yet, buy another full can (box or bag of whatever) and waste most of it.
Grrr.
The insanity needs to stop… because today I discovered it’s gone one step too far.
My husband likes the old fashioned Shake and Bake barbecue chicken so every once in a while I throw him a bone and make it.
.

.
There I was with my foil wrapped pan, my chicken leg quarters and and a box of seasoning packets. I was primed and ready to shake.
Problem was… there was no shaker bag in the box. You know the ones – they were flimsy, never closed properly and weren’t big enough for whatever you needed to shake?
Nada.
Zip.
Nothing.
Even though the side of the box clearly states you should use it.
.

.
This is egregious marketing.
If you no longer include the shaking apparatus? You should no longer be able to call yourself Shake and Bake.
That’s just false advertising.
😡
.
They did the same thing to a premium ice cream that I liked… just gave ya less. Considering how little food costs in its raw form, you’d think they wouldn’t try to gouge for profits.

If even the charities are doing it these days, what hope is there for ice cream?

Progress can sometimes be a beautiful thing. Other times not so much. my guess is there was a failure of the packaging equipment. robbie robot was nearly on the job… and there was a tremor not a shake in the force…

I can’t explain why your Shake N Bake had no shake. But I’ve got plenty of experience with watching the sizes of products slowly wither away over time. What I love is when they shrink the package for a short period of time, then bring it back full sized and say you’re getting X percent more for free! Cheer detergent pulled that crap when I used to stock that department. Just a few weeks ago, I noticed they shrunk the size of the Rubbermaid food storage containers in the area I stock now… so the practice isn’t even limited to grocery products!

If they think they can get away with it… and they can because I still buy the products… they will.

When the Wicked Witch was shrinking, she had it coming….
But this ain’t Oz, and outsized downsizing is mind-numbing.
I’ve got a good mind to complain to the powers-that-be —
But if I expect them to do what’s right, I’ll wait an eternity.

I hadn’t even thought about this in years – I used to use Shake ‘N Bake for pork chops. And it seems the shake bag disappeared about a year ago (according to a thread on Reddit). I wonder why I stopped buying it? I liked the BBQ – probably something in the ingredients that was on my husband’s no-no list – like a lot of sugar. The whole less for more thing has been going for quite a long time now – coffee comes to mind first – standard size is now 12 ounces, tho I buy coffee in 18oz bags…Actually this might be money saving – I never used all the coating mix but couldn’t save the un-used because raw meat had been in it. Now you can probably just pour out what you need and coat the meat the old fashioned way…

When I do the large chicken leg quarters my husband likes? One packet of seasoning was just enough for two. Now? Not quite… so I think they’ve cut back on that as well.

The shaker bag is kind of central to the entire shake n’ bake experience. Quality control is lacking all over the place these days, but considering the name of the product we’ll have to grade this as an epic fail.

My thoughts exactly.

Wow talk about shirnkflation! I hadn’t thought about Shake n’ Bake in years. My ex-husband use to like it but I didn’t. Yeah if the shake doesn’t have the shake bag your definitely getting ripped off. Speaking of throwbacks, do you by any chance remember Tuna Twist? Seasoning packets to add to tuna to make salad or sandwiches. Now that I liked and of course they discontinued it so, meh.

I’m not a tuna girl so that one passed me by. I do remember amazing lemon pepper Land o Lakes flavored butter squares. Loved them for shrimp and chicken so of course they disappeared.

I’m not a tuna person either, and that was the only way I would eat it, with the Tuna Twist. So I haven’t had tuna since the late 70’s, lol. Oh I remember that (I think) because just like you, loved them for shrimp scampi and chicken. I only saw that around here for a short while and just like that it disappeared.

There were 3 flavors… lemon pepper, southwest and one other I don’t remember. I miss them.

My partner makes homemade Shake and Bake, but not the Barbeque flavour. She created her own mix of spices with btread crumbs, and keeps it in the freezer. She uses it over and over till its gone, then makes more.It does not go bad from having had raw meat in it.

My guy only likes the barbecue shake.
Great idea about freezing your own though.

Arrggg. I left a market the other day with two tiny bags for $90 and couldn’t figure out what to eat later. And now, you’ll have to “shake” that in a malfunctioning high-priced ziplock bag!

It seems like $90 is basically bread, milk and a few bananas these days.
It’s crazy.

Oh! Yes! And wait…toilet paper took it waaaay over. Darn essentials! It’s crazy. And no laughing matter—so I guess I have to laugh. Even though I don’t want to.

Intentional or did you get a bad package?
I’ve been running different things through a cpi calculator and confirmed that increases in grocery prices (and modt every consumable) have FAR exceeded wage increases and even generic inflation. It’s all greed. Companies used to be happy with ANY increase in profits. Now it’s normal to expect 20% profit increases each and every year.

Per google Nov 2022: “The decision to cut the bags will save a staggering 900,000 pounds of plastic waste annually.”

That sounds good, but if I’m just using a different plastic bag how does that help…?

It doesn’t, it just makes them look better and get more profit.

Shrinkflation is getting out of hand. My favorite Greek yogurt is 20% smaller but doesn’t cost a penny less. When will the madness end?!

I often wonder how much higher food prices will get. Then I go grocery shopping and I know…

It’s going both ways at the grocery store: shrinkflation and inflation. The husband does more of the shopping than I do, so when I do go, I’m always shocked by the cost vs. how much food I got. It’s depressing.

What? How could a person shake if there is no shaker to be found?
Apparently the marketing dept forgot to adjust the box directions…I’d say a meeting needs to happen.
