.
Lord Dudley Mountcatten was fascinated by something on the front porch the other day.
.

.
Upon further investigation….
.

.
I discovered a Polyphemus caterpillar on a section of our stone siding.
.

.
Strange creatures indeed.
.

.
The close up photos are reminiscent of a Hollywood space alien.
.

.
How cool is that!
It would be nice if he sticks around after his metamorphosis…
.

.
With a six inch wingspan, he’ll be quite impressive.
😊
.
I wonder if Dudley was drooling, cuz it looks lemon-lime flavored. The color and size transformation is staggering. As Kramer said, “Mother Nature’s a maaad scientist.”

Great pics!
I’m not big on insects if any sort .. though I always catch them before throwing out the house.
And I’m sure I’d totally freak if a moth with a 6″ wingspan flew in.
Which is kinda strange coz I love birds and bats and they don’t faze me at all. I think it must be some kind of learned behaviour when I was young.
Perhaps if my parents had given me a pet butterfly or daddy long-legs as well as a budgerigar, I may have been more comfortable. 😀

If they were human sized I’d be a little freaked out… but I think I could take this one in a fair fight.

Oh so pretty and of course His Lordship was curious as to what that was. But I’m squeamish when it comes to such things. It still looks really good with the camera on your phone.

I like bugs and insects and lizards and snakes. It takes a lot to creep me out, though I admit I’m not a fan of maggots.

I think most insects resemble aliens if you zoom in close enough.

When I was s kid something hit our window with a mighty crash. When we went to investigate we found a moth with a 6″ wingspan. It had died from a head injury. We took it to the university biology dept, there was no internet in those days, and after a couple dsys they told us what kind if moth it was. No I do not remember its name, but it was native to the African jungle. We’ll never know how it got to Winnipeg, but I guess it was attracted by the bright light in our living room, poor llittle cresture. Come sll thst way, only to kill itself not knowing what a window was.
I hope your caterpillar is allowed to build its cocoon. That butterfly would be amazķing to see in real life.

Can he build anywhere, or just on certain plants? Can he survive a Msine winte?.Maybe he needs some “unnatural” help. Questions must be answered.

I see an occasional Luna moth around here but I don’t think we have any Polyphemus ones. They are wonderful and impressive.
