Lord Dudley Mountcatten was perched on his viewing platform, totally absorbed by something.

Thinking it must be worth a look, I stepped outside.

And spotted a beauty.

An Eastern Tiger Swallowtail.

We used to have a lot of Monarch butterflies in our yard but they’re few and far between these days so this little guy was a welcome sight.

So pretty.

So delicate.

They really are wonderful.

Absolutely beautiful! We have them around our house, too. Alas, no monarchs. But I have heard that their numbers are increasing. So we can hope.

We used to have dozens all summer. Sad…

WhereI grew up in WInnpeg, we had a huge field behind our house. Milkweed was plentiful there, and so we’re Monarch Butterflies. Millions of them. Sometimes flights of Monarchs could block out the sun, there were so many of them. Now, that field is gone, filled up with houses and a mall. It is no wonder there are fewer Monarchs, their breeding grounds are vanishing. And hardly anyone cares.
Lovely butterfly entertaining His Majesty. You’ll never know when he sees his last one. Sorry for the downer, but I still wonder what the Monarchs did after flying 3000 miles to Winnipeg, only to find their summer home destroyed. Did they find somewhere else to live, or did they just give up and say “We’re too tired to fly anymore,” and starve to death?

The monarch migration is a miracle of nature. How something so delicate can be so strong…

I’ve seen a few monarchs this year. I had the fortune to have worked in a bldg that was in a monarch migration path one year. When you stood outside, thousands of small monarchs would flutter by. It hurts my heart to see so few these days.

It was also cool because it was a never-ending “tube” of butterflies, just a couple of feet wide.

And especially striking on those rhododendrons.

There has been a concerted effort to plant milkweed here to bring back the Monarchs. I’ve tried to grow one variety of milkweed (whose flowers I really like) without success. Another variety pretty much takes over our garden.
