We never know how many deer are going to arrive in our backyard on any given night…
.

.
Could be two, could be ten.
.

.
They always show up at dusk so pardon the poor quality photos with reflections from the windows.
.

.
When the snow starts to pile up?
.

.
So do the deer.
Fourteen was the count when I took these photos.
.
.
💕
.
.
We’ve been having a number of small snow storms lately, 2-3 inches at a time, and thanks to some cold temperatures…
.

.
It finally looks like winter in ye old state of Maine.
I enjoy the change of seasons and while winter can be challenging, it can be beautiful as well.
.

.
Especially when our backyard visitors show up for a nosh.
.

.
We usually see them in the evening, but the other morning these two showed up for breakfast.
.

.
My husband was out front shoveling the driveway…
.

.
And the minute they spotted him?
.

.
Nothing but fluffy white butts.
.

.
😊

Our Coopers Hawk has been visiting the backyard again. He lands on the deck railing, in the apple trees, on the telephone pole and on his very favorite spot…
The bird feeding station.
It’s a shame he dislikes the paparazzi and flies away as soon as he spots me… but I did manage this rather nice photo.
.

.
They’re so beautiful.
❤️
The following is a notice from a Maine church… and while I’m not a religious person, I have to admit God Invented Chocolate is a great advertising gimmick.
.

.
Clever marketing, that.
.

.
Who makes these things?
When I’m craving sweets… I can guarantee you the last thing I’m reaching for is cabbage.
🥴
.

.
There.
That’s better…

Apologies to those too young to understand the title reference.
Lord Dudley Mountcatten loves looking out the window and keeps a close eye on birds and visiting critters. But when an enemy dares step foot in his backyard?
.

.
He lets the whole house know about it with snarls, growls and hisses.
.

.
Said enemy is Silas, the neighbor kitty who likes to stalk mice in our field and occasionally takes a stroll under the bird feeders.
.

.
His Lordship is not amused.
😉
.
.
Our nightly deer herd showed up a little early the other day and I was able to snap some pictures.
.

.
On our snowless back yard.
.

.
I dislike the lack of white stuff this year, but the herd happily munches the still green patches.
.

.
We started with three in the fall…
.

.
But now have 7-9 visitors.
.

.
So sweet.
💕
.
.
I read an article the other day that has me a bit worried.
.

.
Long time readers will know we have had intense battles over the years with a certain female squirrel we call the Red B*tch.
.

.
But after reading this…
.

.
We may have to rethink our strategy.
😳
.
.
A little molasses flavored grain is always a welcome treat.
.

.
Two bowls…
.

.
First come, first serve.
.

.
Unless you’re small enough to sneak underneath.
..

.
😊
.
.
Our local deer herds wax and wane.
Some years we have 3, some years we have 10. Our record is 21.
This year?
.

.
It started with 4…
.

.
And has now gone up to 6.
.

.
Sadly we haven’t seen the big beautiful buck from last season.
I hope he’s just moved on and hasn’t fallen to a hunter’s bullet.
😰
.
.
Lord Dudley Mountcatten caught a mouse yesterday.
.

.
Pulled it out from under the day lily undergrowth just as proud as could be.
.

.
Not that he knew what to do with it.
We have a lot of mice here in the country, and yes… they’re sweet, but they also try to find a way in our nice warm house in the winter and that I can do without.
His Lordship’s mother would prefer he catch and quickly dispatch the rodents to Mickey Mouse heaven but Lord Dudley is a pacifist and prefers to make friends instead.
.

.
He and his new buddy hung out like this for a while … and then went their separate ways.
Sigh.
