Because our buck is sticking around with his family this year and I’m enjoying his weird head.
We always see him with his impressive rack in the fall….
But rarely in the spring when they start to grow back.
It really is a strange process.
Yes, I’m talking about you.
I have never seen this before…do the racks fall off? Get cut off? Like molting? I wonder if it’s the same for moose.
He’s adorable and I love the bumps on his head. 🙂

Yes. Male deer and moose shed their antlers after the fall rut and grow them again in the spring. The rack isn’t fused to the skull.

I’ve never seen this. Of course, I didn’t know they fell off in the fall. You’re edumacating me 🙂

I concur with the above…. I knew bucks shed antlers, but don’t think I’ve ever seen a photo of one very early in the growing back process! It’s definitely uncanny valley kinda stuff…

It’s unusual for him to be here this time of year. If he stays thru the summer I’ll keep posting the progress..

Great photos! I usually only see the antlers fully grown, on the deer/elk in late summer and fall, or on the wall of a barn, home or bar, so this is a treat to see them in the early stages of growth. I would not have guessed they’d start out looking like that!
