.
I was sifting through our kitchen cabinet the other day for a box.
.

.
Yes, I admit it…. every once in a while I cheat and use Shake and Bake. It’s easy and the husband loves it. So sue me.
But as I was sifting through boxes, cans and bags I came across this:
.

.
Hmm. It looked a little different from the first one I pulled out… and when I turned it over I realized why.
.

.
Proof positive I need to clean out the cabinets more often.
🤣
.
So I’m assuming Shake n’ Bake is no longer a Kraft subsidiary? I’ve done that too and it’s scary how stuff like that gets swallowed by the pantry….👻

Things get pushed to the back here entirely too often.

Oh, those dates are just guidelines.
I’m sure it’s as fine a glaze as it ever was. 😀

Well, I didn’t take the chance.

How did I not know about this show! I live it. Although somewhere my husband is cringing they ruined a vintage box.

You can find lots of episodes on youtube. Sometimes they have to spit out something and wash their mouth out with the antidote. It’s equal parts interesting and gross. 😀

I just went through my spice rack … some of the spices went out of date in 1998 …

Wow. I do try to keep my spices up to date, they lose flavor so quickly.

Funny. We just cleaned cabinets too. Found a package of dry onion soup mix so old there was no Best Before date on it. No idea how old it was. We were scared to open it, so, straight into the garbage.

I never take a chance with old out dated food. My husband would live dangerously, but not me.

Some things we used, like the Hamburger Helper with BB 2010 which could not go bad. Dried pasta and a spice package. But the soup mix did not feel like a powder anymore. It was kind of squishy.
Nowadays we make our own hamburger helper and shake n bake. Much better than the store-bought stuff.

I don’t use hamburger helper, but the husband loves the barbecue shake and bake so I’m stuck.

We bought a few boxes of HH to get the basic idea. Guess we only used the one, DYI was better. Obviously we forgot about the second box till just Thursday night.

Hubby gets his way more than you might think.

Depending on the ingredients it is probably still good a decade later!!! (Test it on hubby first though!)

My BEST WHEN USED BY date expired long ago, but my wife still uses me to do dirty work like taking out the garbage, washing her car, and unclogging drains. I tried telling her politely that my name is Mister Muse, not Mr. Clean, and she told me to wipe that smile off my face (which wasn’t even dirty). But at least she can’t say I’m good for nothing.

Oh, I bet you’re still semi fresh.

My wife went through the pantry about a year or so ago and found a few things whose expiration date was a “little” past due…depending on what one’s idea of “little” is. These things happen. I think it’s one of those deals where they try to increase sales by having aggressive expiration dates. I’m sure that’s still good eats. Would I like some of it? Um, no thank you.

I have nice had a blue lemon in my crisper drawer. Pretty, but probably not very tasty…

This is where my saying of “When in doubt, throw it out!” comes in.

That’s my favorite as well. Nothing is worth food poisoning.

Shake n’ Bake has an expiration date?

Apparently. If you’re using one from 1984, beware.

It’s safe, no doubt. They only put 2012 as the date because the world was gonna end…

Well damn. Now I’m sorry I threw it out…

I still like Shake and Bake but I have become a bit of a mad scientist in the kitchen lately. Much like our friend from Alberta, I’ll make my own from time to time. Next up, I’m doing chili cheese Frito crumbs with Tikka Masala on thin boneless pork chops in the air fryer. I’m cautiously optimistic.

I’ll bet that would go good with my chocolate frosting that expired in 2011, and is still in my fridge…

Like Twinkies, S&B has a forever shelf life. It is preserved through the use of toxicity. Run a Geiger counter over it and I bet it chirps.

I’d rather not as I have to make it for the husband every now and then, but thanks.

Wait. Pork tenderloin sandwich = bad, but Shake ‘n Bake = good? Hmm. I’m not dissing S&B (I used to make it for my kids when they were little), but you might want to give the tenderloin a fair shot!

The S&B is my husband’s thing, I’m only the one asked to make it.
And if I was in the Midwest , I’d try the pork. It just looks so thin and dry.

That wasn’t a very flattering pork pic, to be fair!

OMG. I hate it when that happens and I think it happens to all of us at some point.
I can say with positivity that I’ve seen the commercials and I know about Shake and Bake, but I’ve never used it. I’m sure I’m missing out on something good though…
