.
After that lovely meal we were ready to walk off some poundage and in the Port Royal area there’s nowhere better than the cypress wetlands.
.

.
The entrance is literally right in the middle of town and the boardwalks put you right in the thick of it.
.

.
I was excited to see a gator.
.

.
And as we started our stroll, a local woman passed by assuring us wide eyed Yankees we would see some.
.

.
Off we went through marsh and swamp and cypress… eyes peeled for alligators.
.

.
Not quite.
.

.
A third of the way through? A viewing platform.
.

.
Which the husband took full advantage of, but left reptile bereft.
.

.
Egrets and herons were abundant.
.

.
Yeah, yeah… so you keep saying.
.

.
As we hit the halfway mark the trees were draped with that lovely moss so evocative of the Deep South.
.

.
I tried for a mossy selfie but my arms aren’t long enough to capture much background.

.
There were some fabulously gnarly trees above and beside us …
.

.
And at times it felt like the forest primeval.
.

.
How cypress grows and roots in standing water always amazes me.
.

.
There were signs everywhere saying “Don’t Touch The Trees!”
So of course…
.

.
There’s my husband, touching a tree.
.

.
On the home stretch, there was a boardwalk right through the wetlands.
.

.
With a sign about alligators.
Which was actually spot on….
.

.
Because we finally saw one lounging on the opposite bank with a bevy of turtle friends.
Score!
.

.
As we were leaving I spotted an unusual stationary alligator.
.

.
He was wire framed and filled with trash.
.

.
An excellent visual on why you shouldn’t litter.
.

.
Cypress wetlands, a great place to stroll.
.

.
Oh that cypress wetlands look so medieval and yet serene at the same time. I’d love to visit someplace like that someday. I long to be surrounded by hanging moss and greenery for a bit. Glad you got to see a gator on your visit. I’d be okay with not seeing one as I’m not a big fan of gators or snakes, unless they’re on my shoes, belt or purse…lol.

To Yankees like us they’re tropical and exotic. We have a few snakes but no large reptiles. Too cold.

River,
Glad you finally got to see a live gator. I wonder how many gators saw you and your husband, though!

One lasting memory of a trip to Florida many years ago, was when we got lost trying to get back from Cocoa Beach as it got dark … and we were critically low in petrol in our hire car.
And my young boys as then, took great delight in pointing out the signs that said not to leave your car as we were bang in the middle of gator country.
(We did make it, safely. Obviously! ) 😀

There’s something primeval about a roadside hazard that can eat you…

I like that visual “aid” towards not littering. Beautiful place… and it should always stay that way.

I hope so as well…

I grew up near a swamp in Florida but my brother and I never saw a gator. We used to sneak over there and it drove my dad crazy because he was sure we’d be eaten…

Was he sure you would be… or disappointed that you weren’t?

He was a worrier, my dad. Really tough cowboy but once he had a worry in his brain, you could never get him to drop it. My mom, when my dad wasn’t around, said, “I guess you’re going to the swamp anyway so could you bring back some cypress stumps?”

I’m jealous of the grey moss growing from your head….
My skull is like what y’all might call Bald Cypress instead.

Ha!
Yes… my eyesight may be going and my knee is shot but the moss is still going strong.

I didn’t realize you were married to a Tree Toucher. He’s such a rebel.
I wonder if an alligator’s “turtle friend” ever becomes its “turtle snack.”

They seemed quite chummy, so I don’t think so.
But yes, my spouse is a toucher from way back.

I love all the gnarly cypress trees! We have several in our yard and it amazes me how far away an ‘elbow’ will pop up. (and trip me!) I’m glad the gators weren’t being shy. I too love that litter visual; hopefully it works!
Laughing at your husband NOT following the rules. 😉
