We haven’t seen much of our resident deer this winter because… well, we didn’t have much of a winter in Maine this year.
But with the late season snow storm came our backyard buddies.

I sure have missed them.

Love to watch the young ones kick up their heels and scamper around.

That big guy in the foreground is a buck.

He has a nice little harem.

How lovely to see. Thank you for sharing for us to see too.

I’d wondered if they’d moved on, but the winter was so mild they must have already had plenty to eat.

If reincarnation is a thing, I totally want to come back as a buck.
Living in a nature preserve where hunting is forbidden, of course!

Whe you get to lie on your deathbed, if you do, envision yourself as a buck in whatever park preserve you choose — if there are any left. Believe you are that buck, and you will become him.

It’s not an easy life. Sure, you have a lot of women… but you’re constantly fighting to keep them.

I live in an urban/suburban area and we have herds of deer wandering through the backyards of the typical chock-a-block residential areas which are sandwiched between small forests, state and national parks and interstates and major roads. Foxes are as common as squirrels – just amazes me.

I hope they’re finding enough to eat. I passed a group on my way somewhere the other night and was so glad to see them. Also there’s a corner with a ditch where foxes often have a den in the spring. The people whose yard it’s in put up a sign that says “Slow—children at play” with a picture of a little fox. It’s nice to live among people who appreciate the animals.

I need that sign! We feed nightly foxes, skunks, raccoons and the occasional opossum…
