.
It’s that time of year.
.
.
Red wing blackbirds, starlings and grackles swoop in and empty our feeders in no time flat.
.
.
I can’t keep up.
.
.
And aside from eating every last seed and crumb of suet I put out in record time…?
.
.
They drive Lord Dudley Mountcatten absolutely nuts.
.
I can usually reduce my usage of bird seed if, every third time, I use poisoned bird seed. That way the birds have a sixty seven percent chance of survival which is more than I ever got…

Russian roulette bird feeding seems a bit extreme… even for you. Why not save the poison for someone more deserving. Like politicians.

We say that all the time.
Thankfully these are well fed and haven’t turned on us… yet.

Maybe this will work for you. When I first set up a feeder I bought some chicken feed, thought if chickens would enjoy it so would others. And the first day I put it out the birds came like flies to rotting fruit. There were a thousand of them at least.
The next day there were none! Not one. Did I poison them?
It was then I took another look at the sack. The food was for “laying hens.” Obviously it did funny things to wild birds. I had to pull all the chicken feed out of the feeder and hose it down so the odour would disappear. It took a month before the birds trusted me to come back. Now I have about 40 regulars. But that day, the trees were full, the fence was covered, and everywhere birds could sit while waiting their turn to eat was occupied. They went through half the sack in about 4 hours, it must have smelled damn good. But the one who ate it, once was enough!

Wow. That’s a bizarre experience…especially for the birds.
