DeWitt Decorative Arts Museum…. a whole lotta silver and Name That (not) Crap.

I’ve visited a large number of museums in my day and tend to be jaded…. but I have to say, the collection of sterling silver in Williamsburg impressed even me.

Some were simple.

IMG_2061

Others elaborate.

(Goose feet! I loved it.)

IMG_2059

Some embellished your shoes.

IMG_2058

Cases as far as the eye could see of master craftsmanship.

IMG_2067

The thought of polishing all these beauties left me quaking….

IMG_2066

But honestly…

IMG_2068

Wow.

IMG_2062

There was a cover for your honeycomb…

IMG_2064

A ceremonial scepter.

IMG_2070

And countless teapots.

IMG_2065

Morbid jewelry?

Check.

IMG_2087

Giant turtle?

IMG_2088

With a slightly bored husband mimicking the facial expression of the fellow over his shoulder?

Check.

IMG_2089

There was even a piece perfect for my Name That Crap game…. although it’s far from crap.

Let’s play!

What is it?

Mariners’ Museum 4…. in miniature.

The next section of the museum was fascinating if you’ve ever been a fan of model ships.

IMG_0543

Growing up I had a friend whose father had a passion for it, and while his were lovely….

IMG_0545

There were nothing like the ones on display here.

IMG_0544

Case after case of fabulous ships.

IMG_0546

Even the most famous ship of all.

IMG_0554

Complete with icebergs…

IMG_0553

There was even a model of a ……

IMG_0548

Yeah, I had no clue what it was either.

IMG_0549

Anyway you look at it, they were all impressive. But when the docent asked us if we’d been in the masterclass room yet…

IMG_0556

I realized there was a whole other level of craftsmanship.

IMG_0559

These models?

IMG_0558

Were simply works of art.

IMG_0560

The detail was almost unbelievable.

IMG_0567

I’d never heard of Mr. Crabtree….

IMG_0566

But my proverbial hat was off to him.

IMG_0564

I can’t even imagine the patience it took to create these beauties.

IMG_0563

They were exquisite.

IMG_0565

And if that doesn’t knock your socks off?

IMG_0562

Oh, come on.

That’s crazy!

IMG_0568

Bravo August.

You certainly did that…
