Dodging a Covid bullet.

.

It seems our 2021 Thanksgiving dinner might look like this…

.

.

Because I just received a phone call from the host of the celebration we planned to attend. She and her husband…. who were both fully vaccinated but not boosted…. have come down with Covid.

This woman is one of the most careful people I know. She always wears a mask, avoids crowds and washes her hands frequently. But her husband went north last week to visit his son. His son’s family was not vaccinated, and the town where he was staying has an extremely high positivity rate.

So now they’re both quite ill. Fever, chills, splitting headaches, extreme fatigue, body aches, joint stiffness, brain fogginess, coughing, sore throat, loss of taste and smell.

She’s a pretty tough cookie and rarely complains, but I can tell she’s worried. Thankfully they’re not having any breathing issues and are hoping they can ride it out at home.

I’ve offered to bring groceries and drop meals on their porch, but a family member has them covered.

And though I know it’s awful….the thought that keeps popping in my head is if it had been a day or two later? We all would have been exposed and at risk.

My other half had his booster shot 2 weeks ago… and me? I just scheduled one for this afternoon. Yours truly is not taking any chances.

I’m also not eating Thanksgiving dinner from a can… and am now heading to the grocery store to fight the crowds and search for a last minute turkey and fixings to prepare a quiet meal for two.

Minus the green bean casserole of course.

😈

  2. Sorry about your friends. Are you sure about the turkey dinner in a can? The green layer looks intriguing and I’m thinking your husband, thank you very much, has probably eaten something at one point in his life or another, that makes this product seem like an epicurean delight.
I play tabletop wargames with friends on occasion, though not recently. We usually take a break and fry up a bunch of spam for sandwiches. Seeing that glorious mess makes me want to serve it up at the next game, the better to acquaint my players with the horrific hardships of war. Thanks for posting this.

  3. Did you know that the average age of a soldier in the Vietnam war was 19? That means half of these guys were eating food that’s older than they are. Chew on that for a minute. I wonder if they still had cigarettes in them. Imagine smoking a funky old twenty-year-old lucky strike.

  4. Is this damn disease ever going away? Blah. I hope your friends will recuperate quickly at home.

The closed another school due to covid outbreaks here in Toronto. Ontario has an over 85% vaccination rate but they just started vaxxing the kids… not surprising the schools are suffering again. (I think it was elementary because high schoolers are all over 12 and I believe most teens in our orbit are vaccinated)…

Anyway my friend, I wish you a happy Thanksgiving regardless. And please, that can… that must be fake. I mean, what? Looks gross. 😛

    1. I think it’s proof everyone needs a booster. Numbers in Maine were way down but are starting to rise again. As for ever getting rid of it, I’m afraid we might not. And that’s too depressing to even think about.

  5. Super glad I boostered up! And I haven’t shared this publicly, but both my daughter and her fiancee developed COVID symptoms the day they left here after visiting. Suffice it to say, that made us a bit nervous, but 9 days later we both feel great. Looks like we dodged a COVID bullet too.

I will choose to ignore your green bean casserole dis…

  6. My booster gave me mild symptoms – chills, headache, fatigue – that lasted about 24 hrs, then fine. I had no reaction to the first two doses. But despite the booster, I reluctantly turned down an invite to dinner tomorrow with neighbors because they had also invited 4-6 people who are coming from out of state. I just didn’t think it was worth the risk of a breakthrough infection, even if mild. They understood and insisted I come up and collect a plate of food tomorrow, and I’ll exchange that for a bottle of wine and we’ll all stay healthy from a distance (I hope). You did dodge a bullet, so whatever meal you scramble together will definitely be one to be grateful for.

  7. I get a Covid booster tomorrow but I wonder to what end. I don’t know what kind of vaccine it is when you can still get wicked sick or die. Covid cases very high here also. I am ant to live in a body condom.

      1. Got my booster yesterday. First two shots didn’t bother me. The booster has laid me low. My arm is incredibly painful, wicked headache and feel generally awful. I’ve dozed on the couch most of the day.

  8. That’s scary! We’ve had a few near misses ourselves and even though we’re fully vaccinated, I still don’t want to chance getting covid.

  9. I’m sorry about your friends. I’m so glad the husband and I got our boosters when we did. Just about a week later they opened up for everyone and I’m sure it’s now much more difficult to find an appointment. Belated Happy Thanksgiving!
