But she was a behemoth with a powerful V-8.

I was 16, dating a much older man who drove me and my girlfriends around whenever we wanted to drink and get loud. Looking back, it wasn’t exactly kosher…. but not much of my teenage years was.

We had the radio cranked up, flying down some long deserted country road we’d never travelled before. My guy was driving dangerously fast, not that we realized it at the time… and then poof. The road disappeared from under us as we crested a hill we didn’t know was there.

Airborne? You betcha. We landed with a thud, broke the frame of the car and were damned lucky we lived to tell the tale.

I saw the speedometer reach 115+ … so I’m counting it.

  1. 90 mph is the fastest I’ve gone. In an Acura that had a helluva wonderful stick shift, advertised as going from 0 to 60 in five seconds– and probably would have if I’d been more coordinated. The stick had nothing to do with my speed, but that’s what I remember about that car.

      1. 200 kilometers is 125 miles. I’m pretty sure the Plymouth beat me on speed and definitely in the peeing my pants department. The car could have gone faster but the straightaways were pretty short and the turns were pretty sharp. It was as still a hell of a ride.

  2. The first and only time I ever went over 120 mph was in a dream where I was driving an Indy race car. The fastest I can ever recall going in the real world was 85 mph when I was trying to speed up to pass a car and then get back over into the right lane…because an 18-wheeler was barreling down the hill behind me on the PA Turnpike.

  3. 133 MPH, Gasoline Alley in El Paso. Picture it, it was 1996 and I was in my 1969 Chevy Camaro, V-8 big block 427, Edelbrock manifold, double carburetor, 4-speed Muncie transmission. I had beat two other competitors in the armature division (one named Charlotte DeLuca who was a torn in my side since I’d began racing) and was up against my own husband (ex-husband now) in his 1968 Chevy Camaro, I beat him by 19 mph and 9 seconds.

  4. An H-60 Blackhawk Helicopter. We were rushing to provide close air support and pick-up for some Army guys and Doctors trapped in a bad spot in Kigali. That is also where I did my first combat Air Assault. We went screaming over Lake Turkana in Northern Ethiopia like a bat out of hell. Way over 120 mph.

  5. The year, 1984. On the 401 between Montreal and Toronto I pushed my rental car, no idea what make or model, up to 165 mph. I think i could have gone a little faster, I wasn’t yet at the end of the speedometer (180) but I woke my wife up when the car started to shake so much she thought we were in an earthquake. Never before, never again. But that road is straight as an arrow, and was about the smoothest road I had ever been on. I just had to try.
    No, I was not reading reading in kph. That was something like 265 kph. That was in the days the speedometers still showed both legends. And, yes, I was damn lucky there were no OPP around, because I did not have a Driver’s Licence. I was in my late 30s before I ever took my first driver’s test, 2 or 3 years later.

      1. Didn’t own a car at the time. Actually, at that point in my life, I had never owned a car. We leased a rental car for a month to drive across Canada. Spent 3 weeks on the road. Had a mostly nice time, except for the rsin and snow, lol.

  6. I only topped 100 mph once, and barely. This was somewhere on US Route 50 in Nevada – the self-proclaimed “loneliest highway in America.” I probably could have pushed 150 mph and gotten away with it, but my ol’ Hyundai Santa Fe didn’t have that much pep in her step.
