We call it ripping.

.

Or rippin’ for short.

I’ve heard people call it the zoomies, but I can’t quite wrap my tongue around that.

Whatever the nomenclature, it’s when your pet goes spastic and starts tearing around the house like a whirling dervish. For Lord Dudley Mountcatten it happens every evening around 7:00. He starts to twitch, gets a wild look in his eye and he’s off. Sprinting across the living room, down the hall, bouncing off a wall to the second hall, up and over the bed, across the top of a chair, back down the halls, through the kitchen, ending under the dining room table with a toy.

.

.

Last night it was the blue feathered whale and as you can see, he was having a grand old time.

.

.

Wish I was that limber.

.

.

I’m not sure why he has a fascination with furniture legs…

.

.

But when he’s in rippin’ mode he always wraps around them to play.

.

.

Cats.

They be crazy.

  1. I think of that as “Otto earning his supper”. We don’t have carpet, it’s hardwood and rugs. There are low traction conditions at the corners, so he drifts into the wall, and he can often be seen burrowing under a rug in search of an escaping toy. So much better than TV.

  2. Reminds me of puppy crazies…similar twirling spazzy racing around like a maniac… 🤪

I love your cat and especially his name. It’s because of Lord Dudly Mountbatten I named our Beagle Sir Tucker the Beaglehound which is less clever but adds a bit of effect nonetheless. 🙃

    1. He’s the first cat I’ve given a full proper name, not to mention title. My husband thinks it’s nuts but I like it.
And hey, I’m glad to be your inspiration!

  3. Yep, it’s the Zoomies, Charlie gets them too. But it’s usually around 2 am which really, REALLY gets on my nerves. Because I don’t have carpet and when he’s speeding down the hall to make a turn, he usually skids right past and hits the wall. I’ve heard hundreds of “thunks” almost every night. Cats definitely be crazy.

  4. My cat to the best of my knowledge never had these moments of “scheduled” activity. It must be wild to see this on a regular basis. Perhaps he had them outside and I never noticed, but this sounds like an inside thing. That being said, if you ever gave my cat the clear plastic wrapper off of a pack of cigarettes, it would demolish everything in its path playing with the damn thing…like it was a blue feathered whale.

    1. Why so defiant about being owners? Cats are not slaves. They are our equals in every way. Cats are members of the family. I will never and never have owned a cat. But many have owned me, and I am okay with that!

      1. It’s a joke–you obviously know nothing and River and me–or do you have any idea of my relationships with animals–take a break–smile–rub a cat’s belly!

  5. They be crazy indeed!
I call it the Zoomies, but I often shout Parkour when Peanut bounces off the furniture and walls! It’s quite a sight to see for those four minutes a day. 🙂
