It’s been a long cold wet spring and I was beginning to wonder if anything would ever bloom again.
Then…
Bam!

After a few days of warm sun…
Our apple-less apple tree by the road burst forth with gorgeous white blossoms.

I wish I could send scent through my blog because it is unbelievably fragrant.

.
The birds love it.
The bees love it.
I love it.
.
.
Life is good.

It’s been a long time coming but my favorite apple tree by the road is in full bloom.

Technically it’s a weird variety of crabapple that doesn’t fruit.
.
.
But who needs bitter fruit when you have this preponderance of fragrant blooms?

The scent is pure heaven.
.
.
But be careful sniffing..

The bees love it as well.

The frost danger has probably but who the hell knows because it’s Maine passed and now it’s time to fill that beautiful raised stone bed my husband built last year.

My first trip to the nursery made me realize another trip is in order. Such a hardship.

But look at our little crabapple tree.

Finally in full bloom.

.
So far… this is what will be living in the garden.

I realized I chose too much pink and purple so the next trip will be for peach, red and maybe white to round it out.

.
I swear I don’t think it’s possible for our little front yard crab apple tree to have any more blossoms.

Okay, maybe it’s not so little.
.
.
But it’s small compared to the giant old apple trees in the backyard.

.
People walk by and compliment us on it every year at this time.
.
.
She’s a real beauty!

If you’re a loyal reader you’ll remember we had a massive wind storm two years ago that did serious damage to our beloved ancient backyard apple trees. We had a professional arborist in to trim and prune them back and last year they were barren. No blooms, no apples.
But this year?

Ooh baby.

.
They are positively bursting.
And if you’re wondering how big they are?

That’s the Barn Mahal for scale.

I wish WordPress had smell-o-vision because trust me… it’s glorious.

My little you never planted me but I grew well anyway crabapple is starting to spread out, but is lagging behind in bloom time.
Now I just need to fill my new rock bordered bed with perennials for a burst of summer color.

Spring in Maine means apple blossoms.. and my (not so little anymore) favorite tree puts on quite a show.

The photos don’t do it justice, but trust me this is one gorgeous profusion of blooms.

And the fragrance?

Just be careful of the bees. The tree is positively buzzing.

I really do.
Because it’s apple blossom time at Casa River.
And next to lilacs, they’re my favorite natural scent.
We had a long wet spring….
And now even the smaller trees are bursting with blooms.
Every little branch is covered in fragrant blossoms…. and when the breeze blows?
Pure heaven.
But since Smell-O-Vision isn’t available, you’ll have to take my word for it.
It’s that good.
Fun fact : Every tree we’ve planted in the past 15 years?
Dead.
I don’t know why… they just died. Some lasted a few years, others mere months.
But this apple tree?
The one I didn’t plant? That must have sprung up from a floating seed….
Grows 3 feet every summer.
And this year, it’s bee nirvana.
