A happy surprise and a big disappointment on the cliff.

Continuing on our cliff side stroll, there were warning signs…

Which my husband always ignores.

.

.

I swear the man has mountain goat DNA.

The views were lovely.

.

.

The wild roses fragrant.

.

.

And full of busy bumblebees.

.

.

It’s a gorgeous walk and I highly recommend it if you’re ever in Newport.

.

.

And though the views were stellar…

.

.

It was what I found around the bend of this tree that made my day.

.

.

A bunny!

.

.

As someone who lives in Maine where bunnies are a rarity….

.

.

This was a very pleasant surprise.

Up ahead?

The famous 40 steps…

.

.

Which to he honest my husband and I were a bit too foot weary to explore.

.

.

My goal was over there…the section of cliff walk that winds around the back of all the fabulous Bellevue Avenue “cottages” we’d been touring.

.

.

First, a rest room break…

.

.

And an oddly jagged rock wall.

.

.

With a sadly poignant memorial.

.

.

As we made our way to the much anticipated section, my husband stopped to talk.

.

.

And talk, and talk, and talk.

So I quietly slithered away to explore a little further ahead.

.

.

Only to discover the part of the cliff walk I was most looking forward to?

.

.

Was closed for repairs and inaccessible.

A big boo to that!

Walking the cliff.

Still having some daylight left on our fifth day in Newport, Rhode Island we visited the number one tourist attraction in the area.

.

.

The Cliff Walk. A local favorite and an absolute must do for visitors.

.

.

Parking is a challenge and we had to hike a while past the beach just to reach the entrance to the famous walk.

.

.

But finally, we were there.

.

.

This is a 3 1/2 mile walk along the shore and takes you right past the backyards of all those fabulous Bellevue Avenue mansions we’d been touring.

.

.

It was gorgeous.

.

.

Wild beach roses filled the air with heady perfume…

.

.

And randomly placed plaques were filled with information.

.

.

The beginning of the walk is easy going, with mostly flat paths.

.

.

At some spots, you’re right over the cliff face…

.

.

Others have high retaining walls.

.

.

I should have taken more videos, but I didn’t.

Just this one.

.

.

.

As beautiful a spot as this is, I can’t say I’d be thrilled to have crowds walking past my backyard every day.

.

.

Even if there are fences and gates.

Wrapping up day 5 with ice cream.

After a marvelous seafood lunch and cocktails in Perkins Cove, we reversed direction and walked back.

.

.

Where the views were still amazing.

.

.

Spending time with some of our favorite people always makes me smile.

.

.

.

.

The gardens surrounding the resort at the end are lovely.

.

.

And are always worth a few photos.

.

.

.

.

Saying goodbye to Ogunquit, we headed up Route 1 for a well deserved ice cream break.

After a bit of searching, we found an amazing little place with an anything but little selection.

.

.

In case you don’t want to count, there are 74 flavors.

And if you can’t decide?

.

.

Why have one when you can have 6…?

.

.

Their bathroom was fun.

.

.

And even though I couldn’t escape the pickles…

.

.

A good time was had by all.

.

.

Ogunquit Cliff Walk cont…

This is the quintessential Maine coastline for scenic photography….

.

.

And selfies.

.

.

It is also one seriously beautiful stroll.

.

.

With lots of access points to the beach below.

.

.

If you’re willing to take the risk.

.

.

Did I mention there were rocks? Over a mile of glorious rock filled shore.

.

.

And a few weirdos up on the trail.

.

.

This is a wild beach rose, they’re everywhere along the Maine coast and the cliff walk is lined with them. It must be wonderful when they’re in full bloom, but we were a tad early and only saw a few here and there.

.

.

I could have easily plopped myself down on one these benches and spent the entire day.

.

.

The mini lighthouse pops up out of nowhere…

.

.

And the rocks?

.

.

They soothe my soul.

If you only do one thing when you visit southern Maine…

Make sure it’s the Ogunquit Cliff Walk. There’s no better way to leisurely experience the Maine coast and you’ll get some exercise to boot. A definite win win.

.

.

The 1.25 mile walk starts alongside a waterfront hotel with pristine fencing and gardens.

.

.

Turn the corner, and the Atlantic Ocean beckons.

.

.

Maine isn’t known for large resorts, we’re more of a bed and breakfast state, but the Anchorage By the Sea is well named.

You can’t get much closer to the ocean than that.

.

.

Most of Maine’s beaches are rocky, but Wells… the neighboring town… has plenty of sand.

The Cliff Walk is fully paved and easy to traverse…. and did I mention there are rocks?

.

.

When you marry a billy goat like my husband, rocks are never left unexplored.

.

.

I can’t say enough good things about the beauty of this place and it’s hardly a surprise Ogunquit was an artist colony at the turn of the 20th century.

.

.

Nature is a wonderous thing…. but sometimes she struggles to survive.

.

.

Shame we need to be reminded of that…

.

.

There are numerous memorial benches scattered here and there along the path…

.

.

Perfect spots for quiet reflection and contemplation.
