Garden fluff.

Since our spring was so late and cool, things have been blooming a bit more slowly this year.

IMG_4213

But no matter when it blooms, if there’s any better smell than fresh lilacs?

IMG_4214

I’ve yet to find it.

IMG_4077

Though honeysuckle comes in a close second.

This one doesn’t look like much from far away…

IMG_4078

But up close it’s pretty sweet.

IMG_4215

These Mallow I planted a few weeks ago have quickly become my favorite new bloomer.

IMG_4285

Naturally when I went back to the nursery for more they were sold out.

Boo to that.

IMG_4281

June in Maine means rhododendrons…..

IMG_4211

As well as Lupine.

And I love these purple beauties!

Elizabethan Gardens… Manteo, Outer Banks North Carolina

Next up on our Outer Banks day trip? The Elizabethan Gardens in Manteo.

But first?

Some rocks…

IMG_0795

You’re welcome.

From Nags Head to Manteo?

IMG_0797

Scenery.

IMG_0798

Scenery from a bridge.

IMG_0803

More scenery.

How’s that for detailed description?

IMG_0806

The Gardens were recommended to us as a must stop… so we did. Even though it was off season and very little was blooming.

IMG_0807

Gardens without flowers? Let’s go!

IMG_0809

It was a pretty spot… with lots of different areas to explore.

IMG_0811

They were in the middle of their annual Christmas light show….

IMG_0810

So of course we went in the middle of the day when the sun was shining.

IMG_0813

There was an impressive set of gates.

IMG_0812

Neatly trimmed boxwoods…

IMG_0817

And Queen Elizabeth I.

IMG_0819

There were paths with balls…

IMG_0820

And paths with statues.

IMG_0822

And some extremely large butterflies.

IMG_0825

Funky Christmas lights were everywhere.

IMG_0827

And I’m sure it would have been quite pretty….

IMG_0843

Had we been there at night.

IMG_0829

Okaaaay.

Not sure what that was all about, but I don’t like peas either….. so, huzzah!

IMG_0831

There was a lonely ruin of something.

IMG_0832

And a man shivering in the cold wind.

Oh, wait. That’s the husband…. I didn’t recognize him from the front.

IMG_0837

There were fountains.

IMG_0839

And ass ends of statues.

IMG_0840

Surrounded by tightly trimmed bushes.

Stop snickering…. I know where your mind went.

There were creepy garden gnomes.

IMG_0845

And an indoor butterfly garden…

IMG_0847

With no butterflies.

IMG_0848

But plenty of fluffy gnomes.

IMG_0851

Garden path U turns…

IMG_0853

And yay!

Finally something was blooming.

IMG_0854

There were also the type of Christmas decorations you only see down south.

IMG_0862

Wouldn’t be much point of laying these on the ground up my way.

IMG_0860

But there was an impressive old tree.

IMG_0858

And yes, I do mean old.

IMG_0856

Now that’s a senior citizen!

IMG_0864

More paths…

IMG_0865

More decorations….

IMG_0866

A courtyard….

IMG_0868

A gift shop….

IMG_0873

And a fellow with a wilder hairdo than me after the windy pier.

IMG_0870

By this time we’d looped back around to the beginning.

But not before we learned a few things…

IMG_0874

About bees.

IMG_0875

In case you’re wondering, Maine’s state insect is also the honeybee. Although we designated it as such in 1975.

Long live the bee!

And plagiarism apparently.

Cape Cod Day 7… Highfield Hall, some twigs and the last supper.

IMG_9691

Since we were in the area we thought we’d check it out.

IMG_9673

The Hall however, had other ideas and was locked up tight.

But there were twigs.

IMG_9686

Lots and lots….

IMG_9681

Of twigs.

IMG_9676

Cleverly wound twigs.

IMG_9679

Twigs you could walk through.

Big twigs.

IMG_9682

Really big twigs.

IMG_9685

Respect the twigs.

Got it.

IMG_9688

There was also a sunken garden….

IMG_9687

That was mostly dead since it was the middle of November.

IMG_9695

But it had whimsical birds on a polka dot tree in the middle, so that more than made up for it.

IMG_9699

Photo of the rear of the house we couldn’t get in.

Yes, it was a banner visit.

IMG_9677

Good thing there were twigs so it wasn’t a complete waste of time.

Blah, blah, blah… I know, you’re getting bored and are silently screaming for food.

IMG_9706

Our last meal in Cape Cod ended up being at the Stomping Grounds Grille in Buzzards Bay.

And while buzzards aren’t usually the best dinner companions…

2b8s2a

This place looked promising.

IMG_9707

It was basically a lovely old home…

IMG_9708

Retro fitted to a restaurant/bar.

IMG_9713

And while I was walking around…

IMG_9711

I discovered a theme.

IMG_9709

A rock and roll theme….

IMG_9718

And when I saw Jerry Garcia on the shelf?

I felt right at home.

IMG_9715

See? My kind of place…

IMG_9714

The cocktail list made me smile and order a few.

IMG_9717

As we chatted with the very personable bartender who told me there was a turntable in the back room with an album collection…. and we could play anything we liked.

IMG_9723

We were having such a good time I almost forgot to take pictures of the food, but here’s their stellar broccoli cheese soup. Soooo good.

Secret ingredient? Nutmeg.

IMG_9724

I’m afraid I don’t even remember what the husband had…. but here’s my crab cake burger with side spinach salad and cole slaw.

Yum.

Polar Caves Part 2… rocks, trees and more rocks.

Walking along a lovely path past a duck pond….

515

We found the covered bridge.

IMG_2473

And kissed.

519

Continuing along the walkways…

IMG_2474

We read the park’s history.

IMG_2476

And decided what to do first.

IMG_2475

Remember when I said this series would have a lot of rocks?

The rocks start now.

IMG_2489

Matter of fact, this section was called the Rock Garden.

IMG_2495

So clearly I’m not the only enthusiast.

IMG_2486

I loved it.

IMG_2479

It was like a moss covered fairy village with fabulously crafted wooden boardwalks.

IMG_2493

Meticulously cut around the rocks.

533

I could have happily wandered there all day.

556

Rocks!

535

Some seriously big rocks.

549

Did I mention this was a rock garden….

543

And it was full of rocks?

548

I was loving it.

546

Though I admit getting a little tired from all the steps.

IMG_2496

But the rocks….

IMG_2501

They rocked.

IMG_2498

As did the funky lichen, ferns and moss.

IMG_2499

The steps?

IMG_2502

My thighs said, not so much.

522

But we kept walking.

IMG_2492

Through some seriously old rocks…

IMG_2484

A veritable maze of old rocks.

564

Fern covered rocks!

565

And then we discovered the caves we’d come to see…

558

Were way up there.

I’m in love…. with a moth.

I know, it’s a little odd.

But if he was visiting your flowers? You’d love him too.

IMG_5956

Meet Herman.

IMG_5957

My hummingbird moth.

He’s been visiting everyday and I’m smitten.

IMG_E5965

Herman is special, and not often seen in these parts.

IMG_E5973

IMG_E5959

I know our love is doomed.

Interspecies relationships rarely work out….

IMG_E5958

But for now, I’ll enjoy every moment we share.

I admit, it made me look.

I walked by my window the other day and had to do a double take.

Across the road on our neighbor’s organic vegetable farm, the seasonal workers were weeding a garden patch. Most summers there are Mexican field hands, but because of the new immigration policies of He Who Will Remain Nameless… this year the workers are Jamaican.

IMG_1087

Now, I’ve never been to Jamaica.

But I’m going to go out on a limb here…

IMG_1089

And say this isn’t their new fashion trend.

IMG_1088

Yes, that is what you think it is.

IMG_1092

Cardboard.

IMG_1093

With a hole in the middle for your head.

IMG_1095

I particularly like the fact that he flipped up the cut out hole section.. and left it there. Like a pot lid.

IMG_1090

Jamaican cardboard hats.

Coming to a mall near you?

Remember… you saw it here first.
