A nice meal and a cow.

.

After walking around the clam festival for a few hours we were hungry, but not for fried clams. Seems counter intuitive, I know… but the stomach wants what the stomach wants.

.

.

We drove to the next town, Falmouth… and found one of our favorite spots positively deserted.

.

.

Having no problem finding a seat at the bar I sampled a Melano Fizz. This consisted of cucumber-infused vodka, melon liqueur, italicus apertivo, simple syrup, and fresh lime juice.

In a word? Yum.

.

.

My go to appetizer here is the crab arancini.

Husband went with the lobster bisque …

.

.

Which was lovely and loaded with lobster but served in one of those ridiculously small bowls made to look large.

.

.

Toddy number two was the hibiscus berry sangria.

.

.

Nice, but not nearly flavorful enough for me.

.

.

My meal was a wonderful carbonara with fresh pasta and grilled chicken. It was so good I paid no attention to my husband’s meal and failed to photograph it. My bad.

On our drive home?

.

.

Cow!

.

.

Cow, on a rock…

Who didn’t appreciate her meal being interrupted by the paparazzi.

😉

.

City farmhouse?

.

We tried a new restaurant the other day which is something I love to do. If it was up to my husband we would go the same three every time we eat out because he’s an absolute creature of habit.

.

.

City Farmhouse Kitchen and Bar in South Portland.

.

.

The description was urban style with farm to table food. Sounded intriguing, so away we went.

.

.

On first glance the cocktail menu looked stellar. Fresh fruit purées, homemade bitters and local herbs.

Yes please!

.

.

I started with the strawberry basil mojito… which was so good I ordered two.

.

.

I could happily have emptied a pitcher with my less than palatable crab cakes. The tiny things came out of the kitchen in a flash and had that hard crunchy coating that screamed frozen.

.

.

On the plus side my husband’s lobster bisque was divine.

.

.

It was an attractive place, modern with a few strange “farmy” touches.

.

.

Like the fake grassy turf above the bar televisions.

🥴

.

.

Sadly the main portions of our meals were disappointing. The husband’s roasted squash ravioli with root vegetables and sage brown butter were hard as a rock and dry….

.

.

While my chicken tagliatelle with spinach, mushroom and pine nuts was dull as toast. The porcini cream had no flavor and the pasta was pasty.

My third cocktail however, the Indian Summer, was lovely.

Bombay Sapphire Gin, St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur, Fresh-Pressed Lime, Splash of Cranberry, Muddled Pink Grapefruit, Splash of Bubbles.

Conclusion?

Go for drinks and not much else.

.

The Irish cure…

.

Being of Scottish ancestry I hate to admit it, but the Irish know a thing or two about pubs.

.

.

We recently discovered O’Reilly’s Cure in Scarborough and will definitely be going back.

.

.

It’s upscale…

.

.

And to Hell with the Guinness…

.

.

Their cocktail list is da bomb.

.

.

The Basil Ruby was divine and paired nicely with my delicious crab cake appetizer.

.

.

And the apple cider margarita?

.

.

Lovely, even with its sticky brown sugar rim.

.

.

Husband’s baked haddock, garlic mashed and veggie medley was tasty…

.

.

And my chicken pot (biscuit) pie was a scrumptious thick, creamy delight.

.

.

And yes, they snuck that annoying ‘kitchen wellness fee’ I detest on the bill (it bothers me because I doubt the kitchen staff ever see the money) but the food and drinks were so good we’ll return despite the annoyance.

😊

.

Go west (not so) young River…

.

We headed west recently… which is always a nice drive.

.

.

Destination?

.

.

An unassuming little Italian restaurant housed in an old shoe factory.

.

.

Lots of original exposed beams and sunlight.

.

.

And some seriously good mojitos. This one is blackberry.

.

.

I passed on the pickle.

🤢

.

.

Lunch for me was a tasty chicken carbonara tortellini. Their pasta is fresh and fabulous. Mojito #2? Mango.

.

.

Husband went with haddock piccata minus the capers, garlic butter linguini and maple glazed carrots. Scrumptious.

.

.

I meant to ask the bartender about this rather odd Nesquick placement but was too busy eating.

.

.

Raspberry cheesecake for the spouse.

.

.

And a rare bananas foster for me. I love this caramel and rum soaked treat but rarely find it in Maine. It was too apt to melt for a leftover box so I had to each the whole thing in one sitting.

I had to.

😉

.

If ever there was a reason to drink.

.

After spending an hour here…

.

.

I needed to spend two hours here.

.

.

At the bar of one of our favorite restaurants.

Though this sangria was a tad disappointing…

.

.

The thyme and temp martini and crabmeat arancini appetizer more than made up for it.

.

.

Sicilian Table in Falmouth, home to the fabulous fish.

.

.

And a Wagyu filet in burgundy glaze for the husband.

.

.

Shrimp and scallop lemon risotto for me.

.

.

Tiramisu with brandy soaked cherries?

It almost made me forget how much money we have to pay the IRS.

Almost…

😩

.

The blog where I eat tilefish and am completely underwhelmed.

.

After an interesting but not nearly long enough tour of Fort Sumter, we disembarked the ferry and spotted a resort with a highly recommended restaurant called the Fish House.

.

.

Arriving at 4:00pm since we’d skipped lunch…

.

.

We had the place to ourselves for a short while and moseyed up to the bar.

.

.

One Harborview with Cathead Honeysuckle Vodka, Lemon Simple Syrup, Prosecco, and fresh basil in… things were looking good.

.

.

The view on one side was the USS Yorktown… which I wanted to tour but with only an hour before it closed and $100 for two tickets the husband said no. He’s lived on those ships and had no desire to pay to see another.

.

.

Low country shrimp appetizer? Yummy.

.

.

A Siren’s Mule with Mount Gay Rum, Ginger Beer, Lemon Simple Syrup, Mint Leaf, Lime and Blue Curacao?

.

.

Even better.

.

.

We had to laugh at the menu typo and passed on the She Carb soup.

.

.

Husband had the lobster ravioli which he said was wonderful and silly me… who thought since I was down south I should try local seafood… ordered the tilefish.

.

.

Word of advice – do not order the tilefish.

.

.

The sauce? Flavorful. The risotto? Creamy. The charred lemon broccoli? Perfect.

The tilefish?

.

.

I think this fish made out of actual tile in the rest room would have tasted better.

.

.

This one as well.

.

.

Yup. Those too.

Lesson learned? If you don’t know what it is, don’t order it.

.

.

Bad fish aside, it was a nice place.

.

.

It must have been because we stayed until after dark and the beast of a Lincoln was lighting our way when we left.

.

.

At least we had good timing for some beautiful Charleston skies on the way back.

.

.

😊

.

Random rambling

.

Because my life is nothing if not random.

.

.

Call me crazy but aren’t pickled cucumbers just… pickles?

.

.

Required Lord Dudley Mountcatten photo.

.

.

I’m really enjoying the weird and wonderful things people find at thrift stores FB page… and would totally have bought one of these for the man cave. Feed me Seymour!

.

.

No climate change my *ss.

Ice fishing is big business up here but everyone is wondering how much longer they can survive without the actual ice.

😰

.

.

Saw this the other day and saved it for future reference. Posting here in case anyone else wonders what those all flashing thingamagigs represent.

.

.

I don’t know what this is, but I want one.

.

Because furniture shopping drives my husband to drink.

.

After a full day of furniture shopping my husband cried uncle.

Or more accurately, Sicilian Table in Falmouth.

.

.

It’s the new sister restaurant to our favorite and we’ve been a few times. Remember the fabulous fish?

.

.

We snagged a spot at the busy bar…

.

.

And commenced cocktailing.

.

.

Okay, maybe that was me.

First up? A rosemary lemondrop.

.

.

Sheer herby perfection.

.

.

Enough so that I had two, with a beautifully rich chicken Marsala.

.

.

Moving on to the winter Cosmo I watched my husband devour the Devils Tower of beef.

.

.

My name not theirs. It was a fabulous but ridiculously expensive filet mignon, no sides included. I don’t mind paying for a great meal, but geesh… don’t make me pay extra for potatoes and veg.

.

.

I don’t care how full you are you can’t pass on their desserts.

.

.

I took half home, but the hazelnut tiramisu was divine.

.

.

And according to my fussy husband, their cheesecake is the best in the state. Caramel bourbon pear sauce…

How could it not delight?

😉

.

Hushpuppie-ing my way through the south.

.

After our trip to Parris Island we were hungry and headed for a delightful little town called Port Royal.

.

.

It’s quintessentially southern with brightly colored cottages…

.

.

And marvelous moss draped live oaks.

.

.

It also has a seriously good waterfront restaurant called Fishshack on 11th Street.

.

.

The views were lovely…

.

.

And though we had planned to eat inside,

.

.

When we saw there was an outdoor bar we changed our minds.

.

.

A freshly muddled pineapple mojito served in a pineapple shaped glass?

.

.

Don’t mind if I do.

.

.

Jalapeño hushpuppies? Yes please.

Husband opted for tomato basil bisque. At this point the live music started and damn it, they were playing my song.

.

.

Since we were in the south…

.

.

Chicken and waffles for the husband,

.

.

And an absolutely scrumptious shrimp burger for moi.

.

.

In Maine a shrimp burger is just fried shrimp on a roll, this was more like a crab cake and I swear I could eat one every day.

.

.

Any place that allows cuties like this to join you for lunch is alright with me.

.

.

After our meal we took a walk on the pier.

.

.

Hoping our travels would bring us back this way for another nice meal.

.

.

😊

.

It’s nice to see good customer service still exists.

.

Having nothing better to do last weekend we decided to take a drive down the coast and try another Batson River drinking establishment.

.

.

Until a snow squall moved in out of nowhere and we opted for a late lunch closer to home.

.

.

Tuscan Brick Oven Bistro has served us well in the past, so we headed there.

.

.

As did everyone else because my husband’s beloved bar was full, as were all the tables.

Thankfully a young couple was vacating a bar adjacent high top and offered it to us… because clearly we looked thirsty and pathetic.

.

.

I was thrilled to see the seasonal Apple of My Eye had returned ….

.

.

And promptly drank two.

.

.

My crab cakes were tiny but tasty but my husband complained his meatballs were “different”.

.

.

I blacked out their faces, but here’s a modern family of three… every one of them on their phone and oblivious to the others presence. Ah, technology… thou art a heartless bitch.

.

.

My chicken Marsala with homemade pasta and pancetta was flavorful if a bit thin on sauce.

.

.

But my husband … who was already upset with his meatballs… said his shrimp scampi was “different” as well. When I asked him to clarify, all I got was “different”.

Since he clearly wasn’t interested in eating his meal, I called the waitress over who then brought the manager. He was a lovely young man who immediately removed the offending shrimp, promised to delete it from the bill and offered substitutions.

After talking with the guy for over a half an hour… sigh… husband chose a bowl of haddock chowder, which I thought was an odd choice for an Italian restaurant.

.

.

But ooh la la! It was thick, creamy heaven in a bowl. Full of fish and fresh herbs and damn near perfect.

Too full for dessert we asked for the bill… and were pleased to see good customer service is alive and well in Freeport, Maine.

.

.

The scampi charge was removed, and the chowder was free.

That’s one way to keep repeat customers happy.

👍
