Woke up to this.

.

I walked outside this morning to fill the bird feeders and found this.

.

.

A pile of feathers.

.

.

Having a hawk who uses our backyard as his personal hunting ground, this isn’t unusual… but seeing this around noon was.

.

.

A young starling made numerous trips to the pile and gathered all the feathers in his (her?) beak.

.

.

I’m sure they make wonderfully soft nest liners…

And are the perfect example of Mother Nature’s ability to recycle.

  1. When Dick was visiting yesterday, he asked if we’d seen any Orioles yet. I told him we had, and without missing a beat, he said, “Put out grape jelly. They love it.”

Guess you weren’t yanking my chain after all!

      1. Well yes, I have two Italian Cypress trees in my front yard. They have nests, and every other day I find a baby crow dead on my driveway. The crows make horrible sounds to alert each other that one of their own has been, well that has fallen out of the nest. Then they dive bomb the two feral cats that like to relax on my front porch. The cats can’t possibly be the ones killing their…..chicks. The cypress trees are too dense to be climbed up on by the cats and their nests are very high. So I’m thinking their dumbass baby chicks are falling out of the nest to learn to fly and when they can’t, the plummet to the concrete below and die. Then the stupid crows think the cats did it, then they dive bomb them and I take offense and use my pellet gun to keep them off the poor cats. I hate crows and pigeons they are a menace.

      2. Crows may be a little annoying, but they’re certainly not stupid – that they talk about and mourn their children is evidence of that. And shoot the cats instead. They kill more native wildlife.

  2. I’ve got bad news honey. Remember your Aunt Mabel? Well, she kinda got ripped to shreds by a hawk. But the good news is, now we can afford that new insulation we’ve always wanted for our nest!
