At the end of day four, which turned out to be an 11 hour day – our contractor arrived at 7:15am and left at 6:15pm- this was the result.
.

.
Five deck boards.
.

.
Five.
Count ‘em… five.
.

.
Three ‘picture frame’ and two others.
.

.
After 11 hours… at $55 and hour.
Let me do the math for you… that’s $605. Which works out to $121 per board. Granted there was a lot of measuring and cutting around the existing railing posts, and at $96 per board we’re glad he’s precise and doesn’t waste material, but wow.
Sorry Mick, but in this instance… time is definitely not on our side.
😳
.
Wow. That is…um…bad. No wonder he charges by the hour instead of quoting the whole job. Maybe time to have a serious chat with this guy?

Time will tell. Maybe he’ll have a burst of speed at the end..

Two neighbors in my mom’s hood have recently had issues with contractors regarding invoices.
There’s a huge mansion being built in the corner on my mom’s street. They began in covid and there were a lot of delays but it’s still not finished and mostly the supply chain is back to normal. Finally, someone ran into the owners and they said oh the contractor quit and took 80% of the money with him.
He’ll never work again with a reputation like that… But why did he quit? That’s the real question.
Because… the other neighbor just moved away into a resale home in a neighboring town but is doing some renovations. He came by to say goodbye to my mom and I’m said the contractors who are doing the interior renovations show up sometimes at 9:00, sometimes at 10:00 and sometimes not at all, but pack up at 2:00 pm. They work very short days and spend an hour or so having lunch … And, they will make him be there for certain deliveries at a certain time and then not show up without calling, well the owner is hanging around waiting, possibly having taken time away from his own work. The main contractor said he can’t find people who are reliable…
It just makes me cringe.
I hope the final product isn’t as painful as I predict it to be… Ugh.

I can’t complain about our guys hours. He’s always here by 7:30 am at the latest. And he is working… on something.

The inside boards should go on a lot faster. My husband and I redid our deck a few years ago. When you are only making straight cuts it is a whole lot easier and quicker.

The little clips are smaller than he’s used to and are giving him a hard time…

Oh that’s not good, for five boards? Hell no!

It did seem a bit extreme.

You do want those to be as perfect as possible, and he is fitting them to a structure he didn’t build. With luck, day-5 had deck boards flying down.

That’s true. But it’s hard not to wish for a little more progress…

That, I understand. Even when I’m doing the work 🙁
